kirktastic: ((Captain) Pay your respects.)

It had gone out as an announcement over a month ago, sent to every padd and station by one very excited Captain. A Halloween party! Must come in costume, must have fun!

Despite the hell that had been going on for the last few days, Kirk was determined that it still would happen. After a long discussion with the ship's quartermaster, along with a small army of crewmen who wanted to help, the largest rec room was decorated.

A huge buffet table had been prepared by the galley and sat spread out, all in Halloween theme. Green punch with floating eyeballs, cake decorated to look like a gravestone, a huge bowl of candy, a holographic severed hand that was scurrying around on the table top. There was even a bar set up with quite an expanse of liquor that had been secured on Risa.

There was a small seating area off to one corner, a huge dance floor, tables spread out for a real meal, and a small corner set up for music.

(OOC: Just like the thread with Risa... this is a party that's 'open' from now until Sunday night at midnight! Go nuts! This IS supposed to be IC, like the Risa party, so keep that in mind!)

Leonard's eyebrows shot up in a mix of amusement and surprise. "I have no earthly clue, I certainly wouldn't dare trying. It seems rather... illogical, really."

"Me, either. My grandma had a cat and I would have never tried dressing her." He shook his head again and laughed. "This one seems pretty calm, though, so maybe it wasn't as scary. So, you don't know whose cat this is?"

"No, no that I can -" wait, hadn't De said something about about Jim telling him? He racked his mind for a moment, until it came to him. "Actually, I think Jim told De that it was Spock's, from this universe, I mean."

Now wasn't that ironic.

Riley raised his eyebrows beneath his mask. "I think that if Spock dressed up his cat, that would shatter everything I thought I knew about Vulcans."

"...I'm completely with you on that," Leonard agreed readily. "Then again, I haven't met the younger Spock in person, so for all we know, he might just have a very special interpretation of logic?"

"I haven't met him, either. Haven't met many duplicates, actually, though I've seen a lot of them. I met Cadet Scotty and we got along, but he seems to have vanished, so..."

"I'd only spoken to him briefly, but yeah, the Buick mentioned he was no longer sleeping in her. I hope he's alright?"

"Yeah. I only met him a couple times, but he seems like a good kid. A damn shame he's gone." Now that he heard that, Kevin found himself missing Scotty, and worried about the kid. He wondered how Pavel had taken him and Hikaru disappearing...

Damn. And this party was going so well.

Leonard saw Kevin's face fall, and felt like kicking himself. Last thing he'd wanted to do was upset the man.

"I'm sure wherever he is, he'll be fine. He seemed pretty tough to me, I'm sure he can hold his own."

Kevin nodded and pushed the thoughts from his head. This party was supposed to be an escape, and he would enjoy himself, dammit!

Except that now, he couldn't think of anything to talk to Leonard about. "So, how long have you been...you know..." He dropped his voice. "Dry."

There had been a time when that question would have made him uncomfortable, but that was long gone by now.

"Coming up on twenty years now," he responded evenly. "Although things would look entirely different if it hadn't been for my wife opening my eyes to the fact that I had a problem in the first place."

He regarded Riley curiously. "We don't have to talk about this if it makes you uncomfortable, by the by. I mean, I'm more than happy to answer any questions you might have, but I also understand that it isn't exactly easy."

Riley nodded and flashed an awkward smile. "I know what you mean. Haven't even been dry a full week and already I've got temptation. It fucking sucks." He motioned to the bar. Then he shook his head and smiled more genuinely, reminding himself he was supposed to have a good time here. "I'll be fine, though."

"You're doing just fine from what I can see. Honestly, I was a wreck during my first party. But it genuinely does get easier with time." He flashed Riley a bright, encouraging smile.

"So, you've met my car then?" It had seemed odd how readily he'd accepted Leonard's reference to her telling him about Scotty, and made him curious. "Did she talk to you?"

"Thanks. Like I said, it helps that people are talking to me. Distracting me."

He shook his head. "No...she hasn't spoken to me.

"But you... knew that she is sentient?"

Leonard felt more than a little confused. He hadn't really discussed the Buick with all that many people, so unless Riley had spoken to her, how could he have known?

From: [identity profile] its-oriley.livejournal.com
"No, I didn't know, but it wasn't a big surprise when you told me. It's been pretty hard to surprise me lately." A coy grin.

Leonard laughed. "Too much weird stuff going on in general? I'll have to give you that."

His lip quirked in amusement. "Although I have to admit, I'm still more than a little thrown by the fact that she apparently brought us here deliberately, because she felt she was On A Mission."

From: [identity profile] its-oriley.livejournal.com
"Yes. Way too much weird stuff." Kevin laughed, as well. "That is really interesting. A mission? Did she tell you what kind?"

From: [identity profile] len-not-spock.livejournal.com
"To do something about the tension she apparently felt between Bill and I, I kid you not. I'm just waiting for her to start writing fanfiction, at this rate."

From: [identity profile] its-oriley.livejournal.com
Riley smiled at that. "Oh, ho, ho, your car trying to play matchmaker, is she?" He laughed again at the bit about fanfiction. "Fanfiction, huh? I don't think a car could do that."

From: [identity profile] len-not-spock.livejournal.com
"I'd be lying if I claimed she wasn't successful, or that it was unappreciated, in this instance." He shrugged. "Perhaps so, but then again, cars don't normally have the capacity to deage people whilst transporting them across time and space..."

Riley raised an impressed, amused eyebrow beneath his mask. "Well, go her, then."

Date: 2009-11-03 12:32 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] len-not-spock.livejournal.com
Leonard laughed, agreeing completely. "So, you been up to anything interesting lately?"

Date: 2009-11-03 12:36 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] its-oriley.livejournal.com
He shrugged. "Not particularly. Anything interesting been happening to you beyond learning your car is sentient?"

Your Captain, Leonard did not say. There were topics fit for general conversation, and then there were those that... weren't.

"Not really, no," he answered instead, "to be perfectly honest I feel like I'm starting to go a bit stir-crazy - I think it's the not having any kind of job or responsibility thing."
