It was so heavily backlogged. Messages, paperwork, reports, news - all of it was backlogged. Kirk had holed himself up in his office, trying to get through it all. Okay, the paperwork was at least not seriously backlogged and he saw Spock's hand in that. Spock was good at that sort of thing, even if Kirk wasn't entirely surprised to see some things hadn't been done. The internal complaints and notices were personal touches that Kirk liked to do himself instead of shuffling it off to someone else and Spock wasn't the sort of person to do that.

So he sat at his desk, chewing on the end of a stylus as he read the latest complaint. It was someone going on about the lack of space on the ship and having to bunk up with someone else. He groaned to himself, rubbing the bridge of his nose. Grow up, he thought at the officer in question and gave a quick reply back that was the professional version of 'suck it up'. The officer, Kirk had to admit, did have a point. There were just too many people on the ship now. They were over their short-term limit of crew, and he had already gone through several complaints from Starfleet itself about the rising cost of keeping the over-crewed Enterprise in food, supplies, and pay.

It was a choice he had to make. The stylus slid from between his teeth and he tapped it on the desk, staring down at the console in front of him. He nudged aside a report with a swipe of his finger and drew up a new document. This one would be going straight to the big wigs in Starfleet. He kept it short and sweet, without going into serious details.

It was a request to lighten the crew of the Enterprise by removing crew and transferring them to other ships. In a way, Kirk hated to do it. He knew people had signed on with the ship because of its fame, of him, of Spock, of Bones... and had stayed despite some serious issues already with the time-whatever was happening. There was just no choice. He figured the smallest amount of people he could get away with was about 80 people. It would free up a huge chunk of space and let people spread back out into single rooms instead of being forced to bunk up. It would also leave some more spare rooms, along with the twenty or so that were regulation to keep open for emergencies (which they seemed to be one giant emergency half the time anymore).

Sent, Kirk switched to the next document. One thing that he hated to do but he had little choice was in dealing with leave requests, either it was a straight out 'no' until they dealt with Nero and Ayel, or it was a 'request granted, but'. He wanted to be able to give them an 'of course, go ahead, you deserve it' but it was impossible right now with everything happening.

He had saved one set of documents for last, and with a sigh got to those. It was all stuff having to do with the Romulans.

What he started reading just about stopped his heart in his chest. What the fuck!? Nero had hurt himself (tried to kill himself!?) in his cell with a knife. How did the Romulans have any weaponry!? Kirk's fingers flew as he pulled up his orders to the head of security (dammit, Alex...) and he re-read it. There, down in the second paragraph. The Romulans were supposed to be searched, if security had to stun them to do it. Either Security had issues with knowing what a weapon was, or no one had gotten the balls together to search them.

Chapel had ended up going into the cell to save Nero's life (or heal him...). Kirk's eyes narrowed and he felt his teeth grind together. Immediately he sent out a message.

To: Christine Chapel ([livejournal.com profile] headnursechapel)
Nurse Chapel,

I need to speak to you in my office immediately unless you're in surgery.

Captain Kirk

He had to get more information on what had happened down in that cell. If he thought that was bad, it just got worse. He read about the Narada being on board, talking to her masters. Shit, shit... As if all of it couldn't get worse. He read Starfleet's orders for them to go straight to the New Vulcan Colony, and his brows vanished into his hairline. It made sense, of course, as the Vulcans were the ones the most hurt by Nero's actions.

There was someone on the colony he needed to talk to. Wanted to talk to. It made his heart beat flutter in his chest in a strange mixture of knowing, wanting. Spock, the one that had started it all, had never fully left him. Too many memories, emotions... left behind too many questions. Maybe he could get answers to them.

It would also be the site of Nero's trial, Kirk could only assume. He wondered how it would be worked out to try someone like this. Note, go back and read any history I can get on any sort of similar situation. He wanted to go into a trial prepared with what might happen, what they could ask of him, the story he would have to tell (again, with tons of additionals).

He already started to schedule a meeting with security for after his talk with Chapel. Heads would roll for what happened down in the brig. He saw a mention of Jim going down there with the Narada - he'd have to talk to Jim too.

Jim,

I need to speak to you in my office immediately about the Romulans.

JTK

He was going to find out what the hell was going on with his ship, before they got to the Vulcan Colony. How does a week as a kid end up with everything breaking down without me there? ...I think I need to talk to Spock.

To: Spock ([livejournal.com profile] cso_spock)
Spock,

As soon as you can, I need to talk to you in my office about what happened while you were acting captain.

The beeping came suddenly from off from the side of his desk where he sat in his office. For a second Kirk was grateful that no one was in there with him as he jumped, just a little startled. Grabbing his comm and flipping it open, Kirk got out "Hello" before realizing it was only an alert.

The alert was coming from Jim's communicator, down there on the planet, trapped with Nero. Knowing that Jim had managed to sneak out two messages before, a small shiver of worry passed through him as he realized what only an alert could mean. It had to be a warning that something was happening - something that Jim couldn't sneak away to tell him. Considering the circumstances, there were very few things that the warning could have been. Kirk could only hope that getting out this warning wasn't putting Jim's life in danger.

Kirk thought about what George had said the other night. The idea had gotten stuck in his head - transported against their will. He had thought about it, laying in bed at night when he couldn't sleep. Could there be a way to do just that? To transport not only Jim and Spock, but the Romulans as well? If something was happening right now, something that Jim thought was worthwhile enough to have to warn him about, then maybe it was their only chance. He had a good feeling that whatever was taking place wouldn't give him much time to think this over.

Just as Kirk started to get out of his chair, the computer spoke to him as simultaneously a red alert appeared on the console before him. Sensors indicate the Narada is no longer aboard this ship. Repeat - sensors indicate the Narada is no longer aboard this ship. Kirk felt a cold fear run down his spine as he stared at the diagram of the Enterprise the computer automatically pulled up. It showed the Narada's last known location in Jim's quarters with the single red dot disappearing and reappearing over and over again.

With that in mind, Kirk found himself rushing down toward the nearest transporter room, with his comm still in hand. "Captain to Lt Commander Scott - Captain to Lt Commander Scott!" When Scotty didn't reply fast enough, Kirk snapped off a curse and hit the transporter room at a dead run. Kirk looked to the startled ensign behind the controls. "Ensign - the last known coordinates of the Narada should still be in the system, pull them up for me," Kirk said quickly as he slid in behind another console. His fingers flew over the screen, and using the coordinates the ensign pulled up, he scanned for information about the Narada.

The Enterprise's powerful scanners swept across where the Narada lay dormant on the surface of the planet below. To his utter amazement, the powerful shielding that had not only protected the Narada from every attack they had launched her way but kept them from doing something like this before was down, as if it had never been. To his greatest fear, Kirk could also see that her power levels, which had previously been so low, were now quickly picking up. That had to be it. That had to be what Jim was warning him about. The Romulans had done exactly as they feared - they had managed to not only locate but mine up the dilithium without the use of the plasma drill Kirk had helped destroy.

There was no time to think about what he had to do or talk to any other officer if this was the right course of action. Kirk looked to the confused ensign beside him and said, "Prepare - four to beam up." The computer recognized Jim and Spock's signatures immediately - it was Nero and Ayel's that Kirk had to locate. It wasn't hard, there seemed to be little else in the immediate area around the Narada. The mining must have scared everything off, Kirk thought to himself off-handedly. He had no doubt that every second counted. After all, it was impossible to say how long it would take for the Narada to get her shields back up.

Kirk hadn't realized he was holding his breath until the computer finally located Nero and Ayel's signatures. Something else that George had said came into his mind. He wasn't sure that Stockholm Syndrome was the right term for it but Kirk understood what his father meant. He didn't know how Jim and Spock would react to what he planned to do. With that in mind, he carefully divided the instructions to the transporter. Spock and Jim would be sent the conference room on Deck A. He instructed the computer to lock the door on the conference room and put his own personal code as the clearance needed for the lock.

The next set of instructions were a little more difficult to do in such a hurry. Choosing two open rooms in the brig, he set each one to its highest level of security. Only the captain would be able to lower the force field that separated the Romulans from the rest of the ship. Knowing the anger he had seen in Spock's eyes, and knowing the revenge in some people's hearts, even in his own, Kirk had to ensure that his crew was protected from Nero, and Nero from his crew. I'll need to speak with Security myself, Kirk thought quickly as he typed.

As he finished the last of the instructions to the computer, with the transporter locked on the four life signatures below, Kirk could only hope that he was doing the right thing. He looked to the ensign beside him and nodded only once. "Energize."
kirktastic: ((Ouch!) That's gotta hurt.)
He woke by inches. Dragging, slow, aching inches. Kirk's eyes felt like they had sand bags on them as he tried to force them open. He started to move and -- okay, okay, something was bitching at him for doing it. So, he started out a little slower and just shifted his head. It lolled on his neck and he opened his eyes to stare upwards. Ceiling. Blurry ceiling. Lights. ...Bad, bad lights.

He closed his eyes again and let his head drop.

He woke (woke? drifted out out of darkness? whichever...) again. This time, he decided to do things differently. "Lights, 20%." I sound like a frog... Kirk thought to himself, and with the lights dropped, risked opening his eyes again. Much better. He could keep them open this time. He glanced around, just taking in where he was, and grunted as memory started to offer up some information on what he was doing in the officer's (ambassador's?) lounge. He focused across the room, and decided that it was the officer's lounge - there was a dart board on the wall which someone had put up a while ago.

Kirk let a hand flop to his face, then rubbed down it. He groaned as he started to pull himself together. All of his muscles complained - sleeping sitting in this incredibly awkward position? Not a real good idea, evidently, because it made every part of you complain later. He worked himself so he was laying out on the couch instead of hunkered over half-sitting up, and let himself get used to something new before he tried to do something as daring as actually getting up.

He tilted his head to the side, spotting the fourth-full bottle of pine-liquor on the table. That's right... he had met James, went and had a drink with him and... "Aw, fuck," Kirk breathed out. Then he'd let the man use him like a whore. While the whore part didn't usually bother him... he couldn't believe he had done it on his own ship. Check out the Fed's golden boy, Kirk said sarcastically inside his own head, laying out on a couch in his officer's lounge, disgusting, fucked open, and naked. Sure are proud of him.

Every little movement told him he had gone a bit too far, that he'd been an idiot. That was no surprise, it wasn't completely unfamiliar. He sighed through his teeth and forced himself to stand up. Kirk looked down his body, then squeezed his eyes shut. Even in the low light, he could see the mottling bruises. When he twisted to look back at the couch... shit. It'd have to be cleaned. He eyed a dark spot on the material and rubbed his face. In the past, he would have staggered/limped back to his dorm room with Bones and puppy-eyed some healing out of the doctor, at least to where every blink didn't hurt. Now... now... he couldn't. Bones told him, face on, that he didn't want to know about what he did... outside of their bedroom. He couldn't ask Bones to help.

Kirk limped a little across the room, grabbing his clothing. At least it had survived that encounter in tact. It took way, way too long to get into his shirt and pants, gasping as he discovered his shoulder had been hurt at some point when he tried to get his arm through a sleeve. Who the hell can I ask... The list was small, so it didn't take long. This is going to be fucking hard to explain. Kirk grumbled to himself.

When he was dressed, he sat. His body was complaining loudly for a rest, threatening to give out in the knees or head. His head was pounding... had it gotten hit, or was it just the alcohol? Could be either, for all he knew. Kirk rubbed his hands into his knees, trying to get himself prepared to deal with sickbay. ...gonna need to call her up here. Limping down to sickbay like this? Great for ship rumors... at least with her at my side, if she'll even help, if looks more official. Yea, great. Now he was trying to cover this up...

This. He went through the memories of the previous night, and just... frowned. He and James had fucked. James had given him exactly what he'd wanted.

...Why the hell didn't he feel good, then? Well, besides the normal 'ow this hurts'... normally there was a relaxed feeling in him, like he'd gotten something out of his system. Where his frustrations and annoyances were in control and he could deal with them again. He just felt... sort of grumpy, sore, and... and...

Kirk scowled at the wall. What was this feeling? He forced himself back to his feet and pressed the comm at the wall. "Kirk to Nurse Christine Chapel, report to the officer's lounge on Deck B."

He sat back down to wait, closing his eyes. I felt better that night with Bones and Spock.
kirktastic: ((Captain) Pay your respects.)
Kirk left sickbay with a dark look on his face. Someone had given Emma drugs. Someone put a woman in a god damn coma because they gave her drugs without thinking about it. What had Bones told him?

It's not a heavy narcotic, that hydronol, but it's not just thrown around. It's serious sedation for people with real insomnia problems.

Serious sedation. This wasn't some pansy ass drug, this was something someone needed a prescription for. Fuck Alex, why the hell did you need to pull this shit now... He slid a hand through his hair, thinking fast. Kowalski.

Kirk pulled out his comm, thinking on his feet as he moved, "Captain to Kowalski."
kirktastic: ((Sleep - Calm) Good night's sleep finall)
The room he had been put into was dimly lit and stifling. The dim lighting was highly preferred to the brilliant white of sickbay proper, but it felt like it was closing in on him. Thanks to Spock, or so he was fairly sure he had told his request to, the drugs keeping his brain from functioning had been taken away or at least decreased severely.

He could think, but he could also hurt.

When Bones had come into the room last, he could very vaguely remember something about his hand. The heat Spock put out had feel so good on his left hand, but despite the fact that the hand looked... somewhat normal... (considering it was still slightly swollen and the tattoos showed vividly), it hurt. It felt stiff and awkward and clumsy in a way that made him nervous or scared the shit out of him.

Okay, so maybe they were still drugging him at least a little.

The constant unmatched beeps of the heart monitors was starting to drive him insane, at least when he was awake. His own was normal (he was pretty sure?) but... his father's... that one was slow, so slow, and scared the hell out of him. Bones hadn't told him anything about George (had he even asked?) and so he knew nothing at all, only that his father looked like he was in a coma.

What had Nero done?
kirktastic: ((FML) Fuck. My. Life.)
I wish I even knew where to start writing, so I suppose this is the best beginning I can offer for now. There's too much to talk about, things I have a feeling I'm already forgetting. Risa seemed to do that, to capture everything that there was about the entire vacation and keep it there, taking it away from me. Like already, I'm forgetting stuff about hat happened there. Little things, like the exact color of the ocean, the shades of the sunset I sat and watched with Bones, exactly which star I pointed out to Spock. All together... I think I want to buy that little place Bones and I rented. You know, make it our place that we can go when we get a chance for shoreleave.

...Maybe not. Fucking sounds like I'm trying to settle down or something. Still, I kinda like the idea. )
kirktastic: ((Captain) Pay your respects.)
This was everything Kirk didn't want to do, but knew he had to. He waited until nearly everyone was off the ship, save some leftovers like the security in the brig, some of medical... and himself. He went into his office and sat down, trying to settle himself enough to do this. What the hell am I even going to say about all of this? He picked up the padd that held the relayed message, given to him within seconds of docking at Risa.

With a seriously sinking heart, he pulled up the relays back to Earth. )
kirktastic: ((Action) Ready to take on the stars.)

Kirk nodded to the other two men and then to the man behind the console, "Energize."

He sucked in a breath as he felt his world start to dissolve. There was nothingness--

Then it was hot. Immediately the sweltering heat pressed down on Kirk, bringing a sweat up to his brow. He gave himself a fast check over to make sure he was still all together (did anyone who transported NOT do that?) and then looked around. What he saw made his jaw drop slightly.

It was a desert plain, stretching out as far as the eye could see. The sky was darkened, but according to what information they had on Restin, it shouldn't have been night time. Instead, the sky looked thick and black with storm clouds and lightning jagged between them in a bright blue-green-purple show.

The beautiful lightning show in the clouds was set off by a deep crimson sky that was barely visible through the dark-grey clouds. And in the distance was their target. The city was massive, sprawling out in a miles-wide range. Tall, dark buildings spiraled up into strange twisted shapes that reminded him of an illustration he had seen once. They looked broken and jagged like broken teeth.

The wind was whipping hard against them, hot and dry and smelling rank of smoke and chemicals. Kirk narrowed his eyes against it, thinning his lips.

[OOC: This post is some time AFTER Bones' attack. This is an open post to all!]

Kirk sighed from his office, glancing to the chronometer and decided that it was late enough. Nine hours since Bones' departure from the Enterprise. He knew Bones should have checked in by now, but the situation at the Juxta Colony had been a dangerous one. A war between two cilivizations, one dropping a plague on the other.

He was proud they had thought of Bones to be able to cure it.

He hated them for making Bones leave here and into a dangerous situation.

Kirk rubbed his eyes, knowing he needed to get some sleep but not having time. At this rate, he'd need another stimulant to get through the day and into the night. He reached over to the console at his side, fingers gliding through sequences.

"Communications, link me to the nearby Restin Planet and the Juxta colony."

"Yes, Captain." The male voice came through.

Kirk waited for a few minutes, and then started to frown. Finally, he commented, "...anything?"

"Sir I'm... not getting any response."

Kirk felt his heart stop in his chest.
