kirktastic: ((Captain) Pay your respects.)

It had gone out as an announcement over a month ago, sent to every padd and station by one very excited Captain. A Halloween party! Must come in costume, must have fun!

Despite the hell that had been going on for the last few days, Kirk was determined that it still would happen. After a long discussion with the ship's quartermaster, along with a small army of crewmen who wanted to help, the largest rec room was decorated.

A huge buffet table had been prepared by the galley and sat spread out, all in Halloween theme. Green punch with floating eyeballs, cake decorated to look like a gravestone, a huge bowl of candy, a holographic severed hand that was scurrying around on the table top. There was even a bar set up with quite an expanse of liquor that had been secured on Risa.

There was a small seating area off to one corner, a huge dance floor, tables spread out for a real meal, and a small corner set up for music.

(OOC: Just like the thread with Risa... this is a party that's 'open' from now until Sunday night at midnight! Go nuts! This IS supposed to be IC, like the Risa party, so keep that in mind!)

"Most days," he said diplomatically, "I'm not sure myself. Or should I be cliche and say 'on your side, of course'?"

"I tend to prefer the truth, myself," Leonard responded evenly. "And from what I've heard through the grapevine, Starfleet doesn't seem to be particularly interested in that in this instance."

"I'm beginning to realize that." He compressed his lips briefly, a small concession to his own private frustration. "I appreciate your truthfulness, Mr. Nimoy. The situation being what it is...well, I have no easy answers. I will try to reconcile my orders with the reality on this ship."

That sounded reasonable enough, for the time being, although Leonard wouldn't just drop his sense of caution completely. "Let's hope that Starfleet lives up to its good reputation then, and that it won't come down to having to pick sides." He sighed a little, quirked his lip wryly. "Look, I realize most of us aren't exactly making life easier for you. I understand Starfleet having questions, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't concerned at the possibility that they might choose to investigate us more closely, and not necessarily with our consent. It's a powerful institution, and in my experience, power does corrupt. And we may be far from home, but we still have a right to self-determination. Military organizations in particular have a tendency to forget about those little nuisances."

He really hadn't intended for this to become a speech, but apparently his mouth had other ideas.

Ephram listened to the speech, actually agreeing with it, though of course he was inclined to defend Starfleet.

"I do appreciate where you're coming from; it's my job to see all sides of an issue, or maybe just my personal approach to the job." He had a tendency to stick up for the "little guy" which was often a weakness in Intelligence work. "It's also my job to gather as much information as I can about the situation, which unfortunately puts me in an invasive position on this ship. But right now, I can see that you're real, Mr. Nimoy, and I have no reason to believe you're not who my report claims you are. So there's this...duality of what my superiors want, and what you want. I'll have to resolve those two parts somehow.

"And Starfleet..." he began, "or rather, the Federation, is actually an improvement from past governments. I'm not very familiar with the government of your history, though. Maybe we could talk about it sometime and you could share more of your concerns?"

And there was an apparently matching speech to Len's.

"Oh, I have no doubt it is. That much is pretty evident from the people I've met here so far. And you give every impression of being a good man. But I have no such assurances about your superiors and forgive me for being blunt, but it would be naive of me to assume that intelligence services don't still get a certain amount of... leeway, even in your world."

He tempered his raised eyebrow with a soft smile. "Perhaps we should. As a wise man from my era once said, those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." And he had, sadly, had to witness this very fact in action not all that long ago.

"True, though I think I would be outnumbered on this ship if I tried to use that leeway. Did you know the ship itself is sentient, and she promised to lock me in my quarters if I threatened her crew?" He figured Len could believe this, since he had made his introduction to Ephram by barging in and flailing about the sentience of his Buick.

"And you're a wise man to know that, Mr. Nimoy," Ephram said, meaning it as sincerely as he could. "History does like repeating itself."

"Yes, I've heard about the Enterprise. Never met her, though, which is a bit unfortunate, as I was planning on talking to her about the Buick, actually, and I wouldn't even know her if I saw her holographic representation." He decided they'd discussed serious matters enough for the time being. "I think she's a bit lonely, stuck on her own as she is, so something has to be figured out on that front."

[OOC - Oh man, I've talked to so many people to try and get Len a description of the Enterprise, so he can recognize her statue. Why didn't I think about Ephram?}

"I wonder if she would think to make an appearance at the party...she did seem more than advanced enough in intelligence to appreciate it." Ephram appreciated the change in topic. A Halloween party was not the place to talk about work. "Mr. Nimoy, it's...actually quite sweet that you care about your car that way. It can't be easy to just accept its new intelligence, but you have."

[OOC - LOL it's because nobody thinks to ask the Intelligence guy, just as nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition.]

"Well, I'd be lying if I said it didn't throw me at first, but to be honest, it'd be rather silly to not acknowledge it, given that she was in my head and that I wasn't the only one who could hear her." He shrugged, "Plus, I've always been overly fond of her, even when I thought she was just a car." He shot Ephram a curious look. "So, you've actually met the Enterprise then? Any hints on what her hologram looks like that might help me track her down?"
