kirktastic: ((Captain) Pay your respects.)

It had gone out as an announcement over a month ago, sent to every padd and station by one very excited Captain. A Halloween party! Must come in costume, must have fun!

Despite the hell that had been going on for the last few days, Kirk was determined that it still would happen. After a long discussion with the ship's quartermaster, along with a small army of crewmen who wanted to help, the largest rec room was decorated.

A huge buffet table had been prepared by the galley and sat spread out, all in Halloween theme. Green punch with floating eyeballs, cake decorated to look like a gravestone, a huge bowl of candy, a holographic severed hand that was scurrying around on the table top. There was even a bar set up with quite an expanse of liquor that had been secured on Risa.

There was a small seating area off to one corner, a huge dance floor, tables spread out for a real meal, and a small corner set up for music.

(OOC: Just like the thread with Risa... this is a party that's 'open' from now until Sunday night at midnight! Go nuts! This IS supposed to be IC, like the Risa party, so keep that in mind!)

"I know," said Bill, sighing heavily. "I've always - I don't know - looked up to him, you know? He used to call me his little brother. He took care of things. When everything went wrong, I called De. That was just what you did, it was obvious. And then since he came back, everything's been sort of the other way around, and it kills me to see him like this, it really does." Bill chewed his lip pensively. "But - it's Carolyn, you know? They were joined at the hip, always."

She smiled softly at Bill's description. "That sounds lovely. Even now, it's easy to tell that he's a very caring person." She shook her head sadly as he mentioned Carolyn. "I can't imagine what he's going through, honestly. How very difficult it must be."

Bill shook his head. "Fifty years of marriage. More than. It's no wonder he's a mess." He sighed. "Still. Like I said, things seem to be looking up a little. He likes you. A lot."

She smiled. "I'm glad I've been able to help. He seems like he can use all the friends he can get, right now."

"I think that's very true," Bill said. "Still. Enough about De. How have you been, anyway?"

"Oh, I've been fine," she replied. She hesitated for a moment before continuing. She hadn't told anyone yet, and she'd been bursting to for ages.

"I've got a date this week," she offered shyly. Well, hopefully this week. Or sometime soon. Somehow it seemed to just keep getting postponed.

"A date?" Bill broke into a grin. Christine was lovely; she deserved some fun. Of course, Bill would rather she was having it with De, but dating someone incidental wouldn't hurt in the meantime, while De was putting himself back together, would it? "That's great! With whom?"

"Well...with Spock, actually. The one from my universe." She couldn't keep the smile from her face as she told him. "I gave him a birthday present, some time ago, and he asked me out to dinner in thanks."

Bill tried very hard not to let his smile falter. As far as he could remember from their show, Christine Chapel had always been in love with Spock, and Spock had always been...completely disinterested. Still, Bill told himself, that was not to say the same was true here...especially if Spock had arranged a date...?

Pushing aside his doubts, he went on smiling and said, "That sounds lovely, Christine. I hope you'll have a good time."

"Thank you," she replied, still smiling. "I hope so too." At some point they'd both abandoned pretending that she didn't realize who Bill actually was. "How are you doing, Bill?"

Bill smiled. "Well, we're all still a little bored, you know, but I haven't been too bad. I've certainly been having fun playing Jim." He winked. "Like so." He put an arm around Christine's shoulders and affected an air of suave concern. "That uniform looks incredibly complicated, Nurse Chapel. Might you need some help getting back out of it, at the end of the evening?"

He removed his arm and spread his hands. "Jim Kirk," he declared, laughing.

Christine joined in the laughter, her cheeks a bit pink from the unexpected teasing. "Very close," she told him. "But it still needs a bit of work, I think. Not once has Captain Kirk offered to help me out of my uniform." She leaned a bit closer, conspiratorially. "How he acts on away missions...well, that, I'm afraid I couldn't say."

She really, really hoped that none of what she was saying would make it back to Kirk.

Bill shrugged, still smiling. "Well, in that case, Captain Kirk has been remiss," he said. "I didn't lose a moment in expressing my appreciation to your counterpart in our universe." He laughed. "But then, the Captain has a rule of non-fraternisation, which is the only explanation I can find for his behaviour. Unless he knows you have other interests, of course, in which case his courtesy would forbid him."

She smiled demurely, but her pleasure was evident in her expression. "Well, thank you, Bill," she replied, laughing. "I do think Starfleet frowns on that sort of thing, yes."

She blushed again at the reference to Spock. "Perhaps," she murmured noncommittally.

Bill smiled. "Well, at any rate, I think I'm going to go and get another drink. Would you like to come?"

Christine returned the smile. "A drink sounds lovely, Bill."
