kirktastic: ((Captain) Pay your respects.)

It had gone out as an announcement over a month ago, sent to every padd and station by one very excited Captain. A Halloween party! Must come in costume, must have fun!

Despite the hell that had been going on for the last few days, Kirk was determined that it still would happen. After a long discussion with the ship's quartermaster, along with a small army of crewmen who wanted to help, the largest rec room was decorated.

A huge buffet table had been prepared by the galley and sat spread out, all in Halloween theme. Green punch with floating eyeballs, cake decorated to look like a gravestone, a huge bowl of candy, a holographic severed hand that was scurrying around on the table top. There was even a bar set up with quite an expanse of liquor that had been secured on Risa.

There was a small seating area off to one corner, a huge dance floor, tables spread out for a real meal, and a small corner set up for music.

(OOC: Just like the thread with Risa... this is a party that's 'open' from now until Sunday night at midnight! Go nuts! This IS supposed to be IC, like the Risa party, so keep that in mind!)

"Ah, I remember reading about the great Smog of LA. And I definitely agree. Slamming doors is quite therapeutic. Having doors slide close kind of just...takes the edge off it. Seems a bit impersonal to me but what do I know?" She waved off his excuse. "Please, I'm not going to drill you on where your C-4 vertebrae is." Her research. "Actually, right now I'm focusing on my family. I don't think I'll have time to catch up on a decade's worth of papers. Nor would I want to. They're boring and dry. I'd rather do the research myself."

"And you? Do you just act?"

"Us Americans used to be a little too obsessed with cars, really. Some of the suburbs didn't even have sidewalks, which I always thought was a little excessive." Focusing on family seemed like a sensible course of action to him, given the circumstances.

"Oh, I was actually retired from acting until they decided to make the new Star Trek movie, the one set in this universe, and it brought me out again. But my main hobby's photography, really - I've always enjoyed it, but retirement gave me the opportunity to explore it professionally as well."

"I remember we got Lenny an old clunker for a transport. he complained but loved the hell out of that thing." She listened intently. "Star...Trek? What's Star Trek? Is that the show you were talking about?" She smiled. "Maybe I should ask you to help shoot some photos of my family to fill up my room. My office was full of photos from everyone."

"Yes, that's what it was called. And I'd be happy to take some pictures, if I had a camera. Still figuring out how to work those replicators."

"Oh those replicators aren't so bad. I always thought they were pretty straight forward. Hell, I got it to spit out this."

"Well, ours decided to break within our first few days on the ship, and produce everything with extra added catfood. I discovered this when I had my morning coffee, so I'm admittedly somewhat distrustful of the things now."

Em wrinkled her nose. "Ew, catfood flavored coffee. Why not just get some food from the mess? Or ask anyone else to replicate something for you?"

"Oh we have been doing that, and they're all fixed now. Wouldn't be wearing this suit otherwise," Leonard gestured, "but still, I'm suspicious. Anything that can break that easily is bound to cause trouble some day."

"Oh come now, what's an appliance that didn't break every once in a while? I'm sure if you asked nicely, a replicator would spit out an old fashioned camera. Did you use the square ones or the big clunky looking ones?"

Date: 2009-11-02 02:35 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] len-not-spock.livejournal.com
"Single lens reflex, yes the big clunky ones. And I'm sure the replicator would be able to whip up any ordinary one, but," he shrugged, "I'm rather particular about my camera. It's not just any old object, you know? There's so many tiny differences between models that your average person who just take pictures as a hobby probably wouldn't even notice, but they make all the difference to me. Took me ages to find the right one in the first place."

She widened as she took in the information. "Maybe you'd be able to find it in a specialty catalog or even an antique shop?" she suggested.

"That's an idea," Leonard agreed. "Failing that, I may be able to hunt down the specifications on the internet of our time, since we seem to have some strange kind of transdimensional link to it or something. Sulu's offered to see what he could do if I managed to get him that info, so I think that's probably my best shot."

[OOC - LOL, sorry, but 'she widened' - best typo EVER. Now I can't get the image out of my head of Emma getting hot over camera specifications. XD]

"I'd like to help out. I love antiques." Em laughed. "I think it's because of my dad. He loved a lot of old, antique things. Winston's probably got it all locked up in storage or sold them."

(OOC - what makes you think she's not getting hot over camera specifications? XD)

Leonard laughed. "It's really odd to think of the trappings of my daily life as antiques. I could probably auction off my coffee grinder around here and make a fortune, which just seems... bizarre."

"You owned an actual coffee grinder? Oh my dad would just love you. What's it like having a coffee grinder? I heard it was messy and took a long time to actually make coffee."

From: [identity profile] len-not-spock.livejournal.com
"I wouldn't say it's too messy, once you've figured it out. Just stick the beans in, turn the top, and it grinds them," he mimed the process, complete with sound effect. "And you really cannot beat freshly ground and filtered coffee. It does take a while, but it's absolutely worth it."

[OOC - Damn you, I couldn't resist - Len making the coffee-grinder noise of CUTE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Buv1N88P_QE), at roughly 2:00!]

She laughed at his miming. "That is amazing. I could never wrap my head around something like that. Some places still do that. I...never really got around to going to those places. Never had the time. Athens is a bit slow to catch up with the 23rd century." she chuckled.

Leonard smiled. "Now I'm almost tempted to replicate one and raid the galley just to show everyone what proper coffee is like. Although things still seemed to be quite traditional when it comes to baking, except that the ovens are more efficient, from what I saw the other week."

"Alas, I never inherited any cooking skills from my parents. David was always the one who cooked or baked in the house." She rolled her eyes. "Probably due to surgeon's hands or something." Though the prospect of good ol' fashioned coffee was interesting. "You should put the word out if you do make proper coffee." She shrugged. "I've got nothing but time now so I'd like to enjoy some."

"I'll definitely will, and boy do I know the feeling. I'm starting to think I'm coming down with space fever at this rate - there's only so much sitting around in your quarters you can do, gets old after a while."

She processed the saying in her mind. "You mean cabin fever? Like the days of old when they had ships. You should try the sims around here. I heard the Federation likes equipping their ships with it so their crews won't go nuts."

"I didn't realize they had that kind of thing around starships - I guess I'm a little too used to the other universe, where really, it seemed to come down to getting some decent shore leave time in to avoid everyone losing it."

From: [identity profile] emma-mccoy.livejournal.com
"Now don't take my word for it. I'm just saying what I heard. I guess I haven't been here long enough to really want shore leave. I'm still catching up after 13 years!" she laughed.

"Yes, I'm sure that'll take some time, so I probably shouldn't keep you any longer." A nod of his head to the room at large, "Besides, I wouldn't want to deprive everyone else of the chance to say hello to Wonderwomen. But it was nice meeting you, Mrs. McCoy."

She rolled her eyes at his Wonder Woman comment. "I should probably go look for my son in this mess. It was a pleasure meeting you, Mr. Nimoy." Em smiled and walked away.
