kirktastic: ((Captain) Pay your respects.)

It had gone out as an announcement over a month ago, sent to every padd and station by one very excited Captain. A Halloween party! Must come in costume, must have fun!

Despite the hell that had been going on for the last few days, Kirk was determined that it still would happen. After a long discussion with the ship's quartermaster, along with a small army of crewmen who wanted to help, the largest rec room was decorated.

A huge buffet table had been prepared by the galley and sat spread out, all in Halloween theme. Green punch with floating eyeballs, cake decorated to look like a gravestone, a huge bowl of candy, a holographic severed hand that was scurrying around on the table top. There was even a bar set up with quite an expanse of liquor that had been secured on Risa.

There was a small seating area off to one corner, a huge dance floor, tables spread out for a real meal, and a small corner set up for music.

(OOC: Just like the thread with Risa... this is a party that's 'open' from now until Sunday night at midnight! Go nuts! This IS supposed to be IC, like the Risa party, so keep that in mind!)

From across the room, Bill eyed his double with narrowed eyes. It had just now occurred to him to wonder how exactly Jim was going about pretending to be him. He hoped he wasn't giving away anything embarrassing. That giggle, for example - even when he went to parties as himself, Bill was very careful only to allow the Captain Kirk dignified laugh to pass his lips, if he could help it. And then there was - well. Jim flirted with everyone; Bill couldn't imagine that a suit was going to stop him. He tried to gauge the nature of their conversation via body language, hoping against hope that Jim wasn't flirting with Christine, because that could be...awkward.

Luckily, most of the people he himself had made Jim dates with had worked out the switch in clothing. But he would have to warn Jim about the Dr McCoy situation, on the off-chance that the younger Jim hadn't already explained things. And then -

...ah, well. He'd have a chance to check in with Jim, if not at or after the party, then at least later in the week. They could laugh at their own cleverness (and, uh, idiocy) then.

He turned away, and knocked back the remaining contents of his glass.

Christine's eyebrows shot up in surprise. "Really? How strange. This is just an old uniform I found in the closet." She glanced down at it and back up to his face. "If I remind you of someone - well, they say everyone has a double, don't they?" She grinned at him.

"Don't apologize, Captain. Your acting was very impressive."

"Was it?" Jim smiled. "Thank you. I like to think I'm observant. Anyway, you look lovely. Have you met anyone interesting?"

"Just a cowboy," she replied, a smile crossing her face as she thought of De's acting. "And thank you."

"I assume you and Bill have been running around, trying to fool everyone you can."

Jim smiled, too, thinking of De.

"No, I'm running around trying to fool people. Bill's running around trying to..." He glanced at Christine. "He didn't try to kiss you, did he?"

Christine had just raised her glass to take a sip of her drink. She tried not to choke as Jim asked the question, coughing a few times before she was able to get hold of herself again.

"Ah...no. I actually haven't seen him yet tonight." She glanced at Jim. "Should I be worried?"

That worry alleviated, Jim decided to be evil.

"No," he said seriously, "he's an excellent kisser."

Christine turned red. She wanted to melt into the floor, but her mouth seemed to have decided to keep going without any input from her brain.

"Coming from you, Captain," she said, her tone vastly more casual and playful than she felt, "that almost smacks of arrogance."

Now he felt bad. He was making her uncomfortable. Could she have missed... well, any time they were in the room together?

"Oh, you mistake me," he said, the words flying out of his mouth before he could stop them. "I don't speak from my position as kisser, but from having been kissed by him."

He wondered if his condition could be explained by the fact he was dressed as Bill.

Oh. Well, that...wasn't what she had expected.

"I see," her mouth continued to betray her. "Well, Captain, that's...an interesting mental image."

Oh god. It must be the wine. Red wine was bad news.

She raised her glass and gulped down some more.

"Many people seem to have thought so," he confirmed. Yes, clearly, verbal diarrhea was part of the costume. "There wasn't a mirror, though, so..."

She raised an eyebrow.

"Even my tiny quarters have a full-length mirror, Captain," she informed him. "I find it hard to believe that yours aren't similarly equipped," don'tsayitdon'tsayit, a breath, "But if you ever need to commandeer mine..."

Jim frowned in thought. "I guess we were sort of occupied," he allowed. "But that's a very generous offer. I'll be sure to keep it in mind."

"And should I ever find myself in need of a fantastic kisser, I suppose I know who to ask."

Her glass was empty. She frowned vaguely at it.

Jim nodded gravely. "You have a few options," he confirmed. He knew about her... date with Spock, which hadn't happened yet, and wondered if there was anyone else she might possibly be interested in. Because otherwise, he felt bad.

"Need more wine?"

"More wine might...be a very bad idea, actually," she replied, staring into the empty glass, and took a deep breath. She looked up at him. "But thank you."

Despite the wine-induced teasing, she actually had no intention of seeking out fantastic kisses from Bill or anyone else Jim might be referring to. Casual affairs weren't her style, and she wasn't interested in anyone other than Spock.

Jim relented, feeling guilty. She was far too nice a person to leave things this way. He reached out and placed a comforting hand on her shoulder, squeezing lightly.

"I'm sorry, Christine," he said. "You know I was just teasing, don't you?"

She gave him a rueful smile.

"I know, Captain," she assured him. She shook her head, trying to dispel the alcoholic haze in her mind. "No, don't apologize. Just please..." she paused and glanced at him, quirking her mouth a tiny bit. "Please don't show up at my door and ask if you can kiss Bill in front of my mirror."

Jim chuckled happily.

"I wouldn't," he said. "I wouldn't do that to you. I have far too much respect for you."

She smiled in relief. She hadn't actually thought he would. Still, it didn't hurt to make sure.

"I think I'm going to go eat some bread, or something," she told him. "Have a lovely evening, Captain." She hesitated a moment, wondering what she could say to assure him that she was all right with the teasing. Finally, she leaned forward and lightly pecked his cheek, quickly turning to hide her blush and disappearing into the crowd.

Jim grinned after her. The party was, he thought, good for everyone.

He still didn't know what to do about her and Spock. But he knew he had to let whatever happened, happen. It wasn't his place.
