[HALLOWEEN PARTY!] -- [Open to ALL PLAYERS!] -- [IC Event!]

It had gone out as an announcement over a month ago, sent to every padd and station by one very excited Captain. A Halloween party! Must come in costume, must have fun!

Despite the hell that had been going on for the last few days, Kirk was determined that it still would happen. After a long discussion with the ship's quartermaster, along with a small army of crewmen who wanted to help, the largest rec room was decorated.

A huge buffet table had been prepared by the galley and sat spread out, all in Halloween theme. Green punch with floating eyeballs, cake decorated to look like a gravestone, a huge bowl of candy, a holographic severed hand that was scurrying around on the table top. There was even a bar set up with quite an expanse of liquor that had been secured on Risa.

There was a small seating area off to one corner, a huge dance floor, tables spread out for a real meal, and a small corner set up for music.

(OOC: Just like the thread with Risa... this is a party that's 'open' from now until Sunday night at midnight! Go nuts! This IS supposed to be IC, like the Risa party, so keep that in mind!)

After grabbing herself a slice of pie, Nyota returned to the bar, sliding in quietly beside Bones. She didn't say anything for a moment, simply looked his costume over. Kirk, she thought to herself with a smile. Why else would he put on that?

"Well at least I'm not flashing the most skin," she laughed, sliding her plate onto the countertop. "You know you guys in Medical have very nice asses."

Bones'd been so busy trying to figure out what she was that he didn't catch her comment for a moment. Then - "What? Nyota," he rolled his eyes at her.

"Nice ears, by the way" he told her, sipping on his drink. "What are you supposed to be?"

"You're also terrible at taking a compliment." She settled for a glass of water, not wanting another one of George's surprise cocktails so soon after the first.

"Catwoman," she answered with a shake of her head, though she hadn't taken Bones for a classic comic reader. "It's a tradition. Me and my brother, every year for Halloween we dress up as a comic book character, even when we're not together. This year I got to be a villain. And I'm guessing that you're not just half naked for a certain someones enjoyment." She leaned forward with a grin, resting her arms on the counter. "Angel? Because in that case I've got some terrible pick up lines for you."

"Cupid," he told her with an exaggerated sigh. "Jim and I -" Bones gave her a look, then turned back to his drink. "I lost a bet." He pulled out an arrow and poked her with it, playfully.

"How are you doing?" he asked, looking behind her to see if she had a tail.

Pressing a hand to her mouth, Nyota managed to hold back her snort of laughter. Just. "I always thought Cupid was the little baby with wings." She gave him another once over. "I think I prefer this costume actually."

Batting the arrow away with a laugh, she glanced behind her. "I left the tail in my other pants," she smiled. "I'm fine. How are you doing Leo?" She wasn't going to give him the thrid degree - this was a party after all - but she still couldn't help but worry.

"Better," he told her honestly. Things weren't perfect, there was a lot to deal with Joanna, but Grimm had been more interesting than he'd suspected, and having his mother on board had made him happy in a way he hadn't been able to really express yet, other than just to himself.

But that was a lot to talk about at a party, so he left it at that. "I wanted to thank you for helping out last week, when we picked up Joanna. From what I've heard, from her, she was close to you in her universe, so I think you being there helped more than you know."

Nyota gave him a bright smile, glad that he was managing well enough. Not that she had any doubts in his ability to cope, but this was not an easy situation and she cared for him - jackass or not.

"I don't think it was me," she answered with an honest shrug. She hadn't done anything but listen, as she always did. "I think your face was the one that she wanted to see." She picked up her glass, taking a sip of water. Heavy subject for a party.

"So," she began, picking up her fork and testing some of the pie. "This is delicious."

Bones frowned a little at that. "She might have wanted to see my face, but I wasn't who she wanted, or needed. We've got a lot of issues to work out, you know, and to be honest, I'm not remotely equipped to deal with an adult daughter."

He shrugged, looking a little sad. "We'll see... but I might ask your help now and then. There are times when I feel like I don't understand younger women at all."

Hmmm... "Pie is always delicious. Why do people doubt that?" he asked, looking at her fork dig into the dessert.

"I don't think anyone is equipped for that," she replied, resting a light hand on his arm. Nyota wished there was something more she could do, unable to imagine how it would feel to lose everything, only to be thrust into a different world altogether. "You know I'm here, whatever you need." There wasn't anything to do with parenting she could help him with; she wasn't a mother. But she was a female, so she had one advantage.

Dipping her fork back into the pie, she held it out. "Here," she offered. "I'm not exactly a pie expert, so I'll trust your judgement."

He took a bite of the pie, then handed it back to her. "That was excellent, Nyota, thank you."

Bones gave her another look - one a little more serious. "I really am glad you were there to help me with all this. I-" he hesitated, not sure how to go with this- "I don't have a lot of friends on board." Bones snickered. "Hell, I don't have a lot of friends, period, and I treasure the ones that for some reason stick around. Like you."

Bones raised his glass to her. "Thanks, you know, for just being there when I need you." He gave her body a quick look, took another drink and added, "And thanks for wearing that outfit. It's fantastic."

It still surprised Nyota that he thought he had so little friends; she knew that a lot of people on the ship respected him, enjoyed his company. Yes, he could scare them at times with his scowls and loud words, but his bark was infinitely worse than his bite.

She picked up her glass and mimicked his action, raising it toward him. "Whatever you need," she repeated with a smile. "Even if that's just someone to drink with."

At his added comment she laughed, shaking her head. "You have been spending too much time around Kirk."

"A man doesn't have to be Jim Kirk to know when he's in the company of a beautiful woman, or appreciate her costume," Bones smirked a little.

Okay, maybe he had been around Kirk too long... "You been having fun tonight?"

"Doctor McCoy," she teased with a flutter of her lashes. "You can be charming." Replacing her now empty glass, Nyota gave him a small nod. "Aside from George trying to psychoanalyze me, I'm fine. How about you? I missed our beloved Captains entrance, but I hear it was over the top, as usual."

Bones grinned, thinking back to Kirk's song. "The man knows how to get people's attention," he admitted, accepting another drink from George, busily talking to others.

But the party- "Looks like it was a good idea after all. I'd told Jim to cancel, but-" Bones looked around the room, "- I guess we all needed this. Got the chance to talk to people outside of work, you know, more casually." He looked around the room but didn't spot his head nurse. "Nice to just sit back and relax. Make some new friends."

He raised an eyebrow and took a drink.

"He certainly does," Nyota agreed, ducking her gaze down to the countertop. She had to admit that he had some good ideas, and any Captain worth his commission realized the importance of crew morale, especially in difficult situations.

"Speaking of new friends, I heard you met with Tina's."

Bones' fingers tightened around his glass. "You gonna get after me too?" he asked, tilting his head at her.

"No," Nyota said, just a hint of sharpness to her tone. "I'm not exactly their biggest fan Leonard. And I'm not going to ruin the evening by giving you some speech about being more considerate, because right now I don't even want him," referring to the mirror of Pike, though she wasn't sure if he knew that, "on this ship. But it's nice for her. To have someone to talk to. I'm just suggesting a little more tact."

"I was worried about her," Bones told her, "and at the time I hadn't known how close they were, not that knowing that makes me less worried. They've hurt people on board," he told her. "I'm not sure how much of that she even knows, but..."

One of them being Nyota's boyfriend but Bones wasn't sure how much of that incident she knew.

"I'll leave it alone, for now," he told her, "but I'm not convinced they're not looking for a way to get some sort of advantage over us."

"I don't trust them either Leo," she sighed, pressing her lips together to keep from saying something less diplomatic. It was difficult not to judge them, so extremely difficult to want to treat that-- she couldn't even bring herself to call him Pike anymore, to treat him like someone worth respect.

"And I don't care what you say to them. I know you worry, I'm worried too. But Tina doesn't like people acting like she can't take care of herself. Neither of us do. So just trust her, alright?"

"They hurt one of my staff already," Bones told her, folding his hands in front of him. "If they did something to her, I -" He closed his eyes. No one really cares what you think about this, McCoy.

"Right. Trust. Okay, we'll just see what happens." He finished his drink and slid the glass slowly out of his fingers.

"Wouldn't be able to forgive yourself," she finished for him. Tina being friends with the other Spock didn't exactly make her tingle with pleasure either, though her issue was less with him and more with his partner. But she wasn't the one Tina harbored feelings for. "I know. And keep an eye on her sure. Just don't act like a--" Jealous boyfriend, she wanted to say. But instead she said, "just give her some breathing room."

Spock had escorted Tina, once again on his arm - her dress seemed to call for such courtesies.

Fucking great. "Good evening," he said to them both, giving Nyota a small look, as if to say, 'Look how I am behaving myself.'

Tina shot Spock an incredulous look - was that a subtle segue into a conversation? - and then turned to smile at McCoy and Nyota.

"Mind if we join you for a bit?"

He was not always subtle.

Spock inclined his head politely, acknowledging McCoy, then nodded more fully to Nyota.

"I am unfamiliar with your costume, yet its construction is intriguing."
