Kirk stared down at the ice planet on the forward view screen unhappily. He didn't have the best relationships with ice planets, and the idea of going down to this one had him less than pleased. The circumstances surrounding it he liked even less. The report he had gotten from Starfleet was complete - up until one week ago. The colony on the planet had vanished into silence, reminding him painfully of Juxta. The Enterprise happened to be the closest ship capable of handling something like this, and here they were.

The information started off basic. It wasn't a colony meant to spread humanity throughout the universe, but instead it was meant sheerly to be able to harvest a rare mineral that didn't get formed beneath the ground, but was actually contained in the ice itself. There were more detailed reports on that, but that was more Spock's area than his. A colony of more than two hundred that had been reporting well and good up until a week ago, but when their weekly report came, Starfleet got nothing at all.

The colony was spread out over a large area - Kirk had a good set of maps to work with - but the area was dangerous. The ice seemed to spread and move almost like a living thing, and Starfleet suggested that if something happened to, say, the colony's energy sources, it could have already started taking over buildings.

Jim stared down at the console in front of him, then stood up. Messages flew out to certain people quickly, Jim leaning over and typing, unable to sit still.

To: Spock, Bones

I need you to look over the attached information, find me the best people you think will be right for this. We'll need to be able to cover a large area to get all information required. Get back to me, quickly.

Captain Kirk

He set Communications on trying to reach anyone at all down on the planet. His father and Uhura in particular, knowing they above all others would be able to pull off a miracle while they got their away team together.

There was just something in his bones that wasn't settled right about this, and he didn't even know why.

The venom of Jim's words surprised him. Bones knew where it was coming from, knew how Jim felt about this, the anger masking a deep fear, that barely tamed alley cat he'd once known surfacing to protect itself. He did understand... but- there was a distressingly familiar note to it. He remembered being on the receiving end of a similar rant, Jim accusing him of having everything he wanted, because of what happened with Sam on Sha'Kwai. It wasn't fair then, and it wasn't entirely fair now.

Made him shudder a little, look down and sigh, his stomach tightening into a knot. Wasn't going to do any good right now to try and talk or explain anything. Spock didn't seem to be interested or willing to fight about this right now, and he could feel the Vulcan curling up within himself. Bones just squeezed Jim's hand again, and stared up into the black.

Jim let out a breath, wishing more than anything he could go somewhere else. This was all too close. Too close, and he couldn't distance himself. Jim closed his eyes, wishing he could make them understand. Was it that difficult? That wrong to be worried about this? He wanted Bones, something to be his and his alone.

All too late, now. All too late.

He slid a hand over his face, squeezing Bones' hand. I'm sorry, Bones. I'm sorry. He knew his reaction couldn't be normal. Was it? He thought of Risa, a place in the darkness with the stars, and wished it was only that again, where he felt comfortable with Spock again. "I'm sorry."

He didn't move nor open his eyes, content to stay where he was, taking deep, quiet breaths. "What are you apologizing for, Jim?" He made no suggestions for him, curious as to what Jim would choose.

Bones felt Spock's meditative state, inquisitive points darting out here and there from his thoughts. His hand slid down to its preferred place on the back of his neck and squeezed lightly.

Jim's hand in his, their fingers laced tightly. It's okay. We're gonna be okay, trust in us. He leaned in and kissed his temple. Trust in him, too. I think we can.

Trust. It was something he still questioned. He had trusted Spock, only to have pon farr happen. Now he trusted him professionally, but in a lot of other ways, couldn't. Maybe it was something in him, a protective mate or something. Who knew.

Spock liked to fuck with his head in some ways, had before things had supposedly fixed themselves. Shit he had to stop this. "Doesn't matter." He wanted Spock and Nyota to have kids someday. He wanted... his life with Bones, too. It kept feeling like that was what was disintegrating, over and over.

Perhaps it didn't, and that only supported his theory that this was just wild emotion reaching out against a convenient target--which he could take, if Jim needed that.

With the hand returning to the back of his neck, he relaxed his shields a little. "Is it necessary for you to leave again?" A question rather than a hint.

Of course Spock wouldn't understand. "...should keep checking to see if the storm's up, or if being underground's messing with the communications." It was bullshit, right now, he didn't need to go out this soon. He just didn't want to be forced with this, to deal with this. Bones did, he had a feeling. Bones always seemed to understand his moods. Spock didn't seem to understand... he could be afraid of something. wasn't afraid, dammit.

He knew it was probably sooner than Jim had originally planned, but part of Bones wanted to see if Jim could get a hold of the others, or raise the Enterprise on his communicator. And he knew Jim needed some time away right now. "There's a few hand warmers left in my pack, take them with you."

Reaching for Jim's hand, he looked Jim in the eyes, dim as it was in the bag. "Fifteen minutes, Jim. Don't stay any longer or I'm gonna come after you, okay?"

To recognize moods in his mates was one step above recognizing causes of anger and happiness in them, too, and he hadn't quite progressed to that level of anticipation and understanding yet. Here, he peered up, examining Jim from his position. "Likewise. I am already revived enough to retrieve you."

"Don't be stupid, either of you," Jim said tensely, but there was a deep underlying worry for them. "You two need to stay together and warm." He would try to keep them safe, and they had to keep each other. He found Bones' hand and curled their fingers together, squeezing tightly. A silent 'I love you'.

Jim hesitated and despite his own warring emotions, brushed his fingertips against Spock's. Bones was the more forgiving of the two of them, which wasn't saying much, but he knew his own problems made things... maybe too much out of hand for him. He was trying, though.

He pulled on the first layer in the bag with some wriggling, then got out quickly to keep as much cold from them as possible as he dressed up, grabbing the old fashion hand warmers in the process.

Bones could see the battle inside Jim, written on his face, the struggle with the ideas that were buzzing in his head.

But he was trying. Jim never stopped trying, once he put his mind to something, so as Bones watched him dress and leave, he lay back down with a huff, curling one arm over his eyes. Everything was so complicated.
