kirktastic: ((Away Mission) Thank you Mr Izzard)
[personal profile] kirktastic
(OOC: If you want to be a part of this away mission, please read the whole post including OOC comments at the end for all information, captains orders, etc.)

Kirk stared down at the ice planet on the forward view screen unhappily. He didn't have the best relationships with ice planets, and the idea of going down to this one had him less than pleased. The circumstances surrounding it he liked even less. The report he had gotten from Starfleet was complete - up until one week ago. The colony on the planet had vanished into silence, reminding him painfully of Juxta. The Enterprise happened to be the closest ship capable of handling something like this, and here they were.

The information started off basic. It wasn't a colony meant to spread humanity throughout the universe, but instead it was meant sheerly to be able to harvest a rare mineral that didn't get formed beneath the ground, but was actually contained in the ice itself. There were more detailed reports on that, but that was more Spock's area than his. A colony of more than two hundred that had been reporting well and good up until a week ago, but when their weekly report came, Starfleet got nothing at all.

The colony was spread out over a large area - Kirk had a good set of maps to work with - but the area was dangerous. The ice seemed to spread and move almost like a living thing, and Starfleet suggested that if something happened to, say, the colony's energy sources, it could have already started taking over buildings.

Jim stared down at the console in front of him, then stood up. Messages flew out to certain people quickly, Jim leaning over and typing, unable to sit still.

To: Spock, Bones

I need you to look over the attached information, find me the best people you think will be right for this. We'll need to be able to cover a large area to get all information required. Get back to me, quickly.

Captain Kirk

He set Communications on trying to reach anyone at all down on the planet. His father and Uhura in particular, knowing they above all others would be able to pull off a miracle while they got their away team together.

There was just something in his bones that wasn't settled right about this, and he didn't even know why.

Bones heard Jim's order to Uhura (http://its-uhura.livejournal.com/714.html?thread=2762#t2762), and his face furrowed. Sybok? It wasn't like Jim to bring someone untrained into a dangerous situation like this, but... yeah, who would be better at finding Spock, if they couldn't?

But damn, Bones could feel the way the weather was affecting Spock. To bring another Vulcan here, to this environment... fuck. He'd have to keep a close eye on both of them.

Hank staggered to his feet yet again. Fuck, he hurt. "Doc. Got something to stabilize ribs?" Even that much sent stabbing pains through his midsection. He was just glad it was him and not someone who hadn't been in this kind of pain before. He shook off Tyler's apologies. Couldn't help it.

Bones dug into his bag and pulled out a regen unit, not sure how well it was going to work through the thick layers of winter clothing. "Hold onto this," he said through the increasing wind, "inside your jacket if you can." If it was too bad, this guy would have to get sent back up to the ship.

He nudged at Jim again. "You get any response?" he asked, feeling Spock's irritation and fear increasing, and while part of him wanted to shield against it, to make his mind clear again, another part of him didn't want to break whatever link they had.

"Nothing! I think it's starting to cut out..." Jim looked to Bones, grabbing him and pulling him close. "I sent for Sybok! Spock said something about shields, and there's no one better to figure out what's going on!"

He looked around, the wind only getting louder, more fierce by the second. "What hit Hank and Tyler?!"

"No idea," Bones said, getting more and more annoyed at the wind, starting to bite any exposed skin. He walked over to look at the security men. "You guys okay now?" A glance over at the path they'd taken earlier to the residences, now completely covered in snow and ice, and without their instruments, Bones would have been completely lost in the snow and wind.

"Fine sir," Hank said automatically, having put t he regenerator inside his shirt. All he'd really wanted was a roll of bandages, rather than regening but oh well. Doctor knew best.

The transport attendant had said something like "Brace yourself," and he didn't exactly know why.

When the transporter room began to fade out the first thing to fade back in was the howling, the distantly familiar sound of a blizzard. Then the cold, a chill at first before it escalated into a blast. Suddenly, all of him was at his destination, except there wasn't any ground beneath his feet.

However, Sybok was too distracted to care. Something closed in on his mind, surrounding and squeezing at it that made his shields flare up out of instinct (which just made it worse). His hands immediately went to his head and pressed against his ears as he fell through the air (and fell, and fell), landing with a uncomfortable thud in the hard, icy snow.

This hurt. His head hurt and now his side hurt and it hurt to breathe. But on top of that, as he forced himself to open his eyes and look through the sheets of white all around him, he had the distinct feeling of something standing close, that this pain wasn't caused remotely.

Something was nuzzling at his shields, looking for a weakness. It felt almost like claws trying to tear them away.

As he stared into the snow, something started to form. Just the outline of something, blackness, darkness in the middle... an eye.

He was already considering the terms of his contract with Starfleet (and no, it didn't include wandering into blizzards or mental attacks, he hadn't even done anything yet) when he saw the eye, just enough concentration to focus on something outside his mind. This thing scratched sharp and insistent against his shields--but he could live with it. It wasn't the worst thing he had felt.

Sybok pushed himself up with one hand and grabbed for the phaser with another. What are you, what do you want? He projected at it, forgoing gentleness for the moment..

The clawing at his shields hesitated, like a predator wondering what new action its prey was achieving. Almost a questioning feeling before there was a sound at his ears, too high pitched to hear.

Just beyond Sybok's landing spot, he could hear people cry out in pain as the sound got higher and higher. As it did, the wind got worse until it was a near-solid sheet of white.

Jim slapped his gloved hands over his ears as there was a noise, something he couldn't identify but it hurt worse than any migraine he had ever had. He had seen Sybok appear - about ten feet over the snow then thud, but now all he could see was white.

Risking a look at Bones, he grabbed Bones' wrist and tugged him, wanting to get to Sybok.

Fuck, FUCK, this noise was inside his head, that space where he'd gotten used to feeling Spock and all of a sudden Bones was panicking, wondering what had happened to him. He saw Jim's face mirroring his own, and then he knew it was bad.

Jim was pulling him... over there, Sybok had landed, was brandishing his phaser with a look of someone who was familiar with the weapon. Slowly the group made their way toward him.

Jim was pretty sure it was the direction they should be going in, but he couldn't see anyone else anymore except Bones, and only because he was hanging onto him. The sound ended, making him stagger hard on his feet. He couldn't see anything but white, couldn't hear anything now that the sound was gone except the wind. If Sybok's transport had been screwed up badly enough he appeared above the ground, and his communication with the Enterprise was gone...

They had to find Spock. Had to. He concentrated on that feeling, plowing forward step by step through the thick snow, hoping it was still towards Sybok.

He didn't see the snow thicken right at his side, and something hit him and Bones hard, sending them both flying.

He could feel more than hear the noise, that piercing ringing that disrupted all his other thoughts (except the memories reminding him when he had last heard that noise) and making him, for lack of a better term, pissed off.

And when the ringing stopped, he didn't feel any better.

Sybok turned his head as he heard the crunch of snow over the howl of the wind, saw two figures approaching through the storm. He pulled himself to his feet and staggered over to them. "Captain?" He shouted over the blizzard; the cold-weather uniforms weren't exactly discriminating between ranks, so he had to take a guess.

Hank and Tyler pushed forward, having lost sight of their charges. They just hoped they were headed in the right direction. They'd taken a moment to tie themselves together like they were trained at the Academy to do during whiteout conditions. He wondered if their Captain and Doctor missed those classes? Fuck something was making his head hurt. Felt like the one time they'd taken off when the ship wasn't fully pressurized.

"Sir?" Life? Was it someone from their away mission or someone from this blasted colony?

Not the captain from the unfamiliar voice, but still Starfleet.

"The captain asked that I transport down," Sybok told them both, and then waved out a hand towards the endless ice. "Do you know where he is?"

Goddammit. They'd lost the Captain and Doctor. Great, just freaking great. First away mission and he was failing in his objectives. Well, if they had called for this Vulcan better make sure that they didn't lose him too.

Hank grabbed the tail end of the rope. "Sorry about this." And tied him into the rope with them. "We're looking for the Captain. This planet is...weird."

That sound came again and died a moment later. The ground felt like it was shaking under their feet, like something was coming along with the howling wind.

"Dangerous," He corrected, looking around through the blizzard. Nothing. Choices: they could wander aimlessly in the snow, or they could go back inside.

"Do you have a way to locate him? If not let's--go back to wherever you came from."

Hank tried the communicator a couple times but all he got was static. "Yeah, let's move indoors. The comms aren't working."

Sybok could still feel the vibrations moving up through the ground with low sound that he nearly couldn't hear. Earthquake or not-so-fictional sand ice worm, he didn't want to wait around until it stopped.

"Where did you come from?" His hand tightened over the rope leading out from the loop around his waist.

"Back this way," Hank motioned carefully, still sore, and lead the way back to the inside, Tyler bringing up the rear.

All of a sudden the building emerged out of the snow, the door still ajar from where they had left it and snow blowing into the hall. Sybok rushed in--felt the wind at his back, and once the others were in as well, he slammed the door shut (unlocked), and let out a sigh.

"So." He looked at either of them, rubbing his hands together to get some feeling back into them. "Our captain and CMO are likely trapped in a blizzard we can't search through. Who wants to tell the Enterprise?"

Hank sighed. "I already tried. Communications are banjaxed. It's my responsibility anyway. I'm the head of security for this mission." And he expected a royal chewing out when he got back from Reaper.

Tyler was just glad he wasn't in charge for this mission.

Somebody was there, though, listening.

There was a scraping sound in the distance, like stone against stone.
