kirktastic: ((Kid - Neurtal) Only 7 years old!)

It was the next day after a long, somewhat confusing day meeting his brother and father when Jimmy discovered the absolute best thing about the ship. The stars were really neat, the computers were cool, the way everyone rushed about (he wanted to see the engines with Momma still!) but the absolute best thing of all?

The ship had a LIBRARY!

Jimmy stood in absolute and utter awe as he looked at PADDs, consoles, even a few very old real books. He loved real books most of all, the weight and feel in his hands and lap and turning the pages. He had only a few at home, the rest on PADDs sent by Momma from space.

Avoiding the stranger in the room wasn't too hard - there was only one he didn't recognize and no one else. Jimmy found his way to a console and worked himself up into the chair, brows furrowing as he stared at the screen. If Lenny could work this, so could he!

But how did he find out what the library had in it? Would there even be books he could read? He still needed help with big words, but was very proud of how good he could read. Maybe he could read adult books - they would have to have some neat ones here!

His fingers gently touched the console screen and he started to work out what he could. Now... if only he could figure this out...

George had asked the computer where Jimmy had gotten to and smiled when he found out that the boy was in the library. "Hey son."

Jimmy looked up, blinking towards his father. He sat back from the console, not sure he was allowed to be doing this. "Hi." He said quietly, but offering a little smile.

"Do you need some help finding something to read?" George questioned, coming towards Jim. Having learned from Jim's older self, he kept his movements slow as he crouched next to him.

"The computer is confusing," Jimmy admitted with a little laugh, "I don't know how it works." Yet. He wanted to learn all about it though.

"Well, let's pull up the kid books first...I don't think you want to read engineering journals, do you?" George teased him. "Got any titles you're looking for in particular? Besides maybe fantasy?"

"Umm, umm... I dunno?" Confused, Jimmy shrugged, "I dunno what I'd like to find."

"Then let's go on a treasure hunt," George said, showing Jim how to access the children's area of the library. "I have a few classics back in my room too you might enjoy. Leonard says you're already reading books that don't have pictures."

Jimmy nodded at that, "Uh huh! For a while now!" Very, very proud of that. "My faaaavorite is Treasure Island! You know that book?" He looked up to his father.

"I do indeed," George agreed. "Although I was a couple years older than you before I was ready to read books without pictures. I'm very impressed. Have you read Swiss Family Robinson?*

That required some thought, but Jimmy shook his head, "Nuh uh." It pleased him that even his father wasn't reading big kid books at his age.

"It's about a whole family who get shipwrecked and have to live in a treehouse," George explained as he showed Jimmy how to navigate by hand through the system. Silence was no a requirement in libraries bit quiet was an appreciated courtesy. "Let's get you set up with a couple of Padd books and then I think I have a copy of that if it sounds interesting back in my room. So whaton this page looks interesing, son?"

"Umm..." Jimmy studied the console, and pointed, "This one." He looked up, hopeful. This wasn't the same as the libraries he knew. "It sounds like a good book! I'd like to read it."

"That looks like a good one," George said. "These two are pretty good too." He showed Jimmy how to load his choice onto his padd. "I met Lenny. He says you two are getting into mischief. I'm glad you have a friend here. Lenny seems like a good kid."

Winona had to laugh when she finally found where her son had ran off to after she had let him loose. Of course he had gone to the library. She couldn't resist coming up to him and kissing his hair when she walked into the library.

"Enjoying yourself, Jimmy?"

"Uh huh!" Jimmy grinned to his Momma and put his arms up to her, "Really wanted to see what was here!" He was proud to have found it - Lenny had showed him how to use the computers to get around, after all.

She picked him up with a grin and laughed. "And do you like everything that's here? Because I have a surprise for you."

"Surprise?" Jimmy blinked, wrapping his arms around her neck, "What kinda surprise??" The 'everything else' was instantly forgotten in the name of SURPRISE.

"A surprise of epic proportions." Winona smirked at him. "It's the kind that I may have told you that you'd get to see with me."

His eyes went HUGE. "...The engines!?" He whispered, tensing up in excitement.

"Maybe." She laughed, poking his nose softly. "You just gonna have to hold on to me until you find out, now won't you?

"But Lenny wanted to see it too!" He held on though, excited. "Let's go!"

"I bet his momma can take him there if she wants to, but I want to make this special for the two of us." She adjusted him before she started walking. "So how have you been enjoying your time here?"

From: [identity profile] kirktastic.livejournal.com
There was a bit of hesitation as he wanted to protest and say Lenny should come too, but it was Momma and if she said it, it would be very special! "Uh huh! I like this place a lot 'cept Sam being old."

From: [identity profile] kirk-winona.livejournal.com
Oh Sam. Well, since Jimmy still seemed to love her, apparently Sam hadn't done anything too bad. She'd have to thank him one of these days. "But he's not as old as me. Did he explain why he was old, Jimmy?"

From: [identity profile] kirktastic.livejournal.com
Jimmy's brows furrowed, "Somethin' 'bout... being stuck in time. Or unstuck in time, or something like that. It was confusing!" He made a face.
