kirktastic: ((Kirk/Bones) Friends. Lovers. Always.)

After the communication with Bones, Kirk already knew this was going to not go well. He had left a last note to Bones, giving him the location of a small lounge near the residential area. It was supposed to be for ambassadors, but hell, he was Captain. He could use it, and he could lock it down.

He also knew the replicator had access to the alcoholic menu.

He flopped down with a grunt into a heavily padded chair and closed his eyes. His left hand was throbbing slowly in time with his heart beat, and he told it to leave him alone. This was the absolute last thing he ever wanted to be doing.

And Bones was forcing him to. Fuck.

"Yes, I would have," Bones replied. "I wasn't fuckin' falling over myself, Jim. If you think I'd do that, if you don't trust me then you should replace me."

He took a deep breath and stared back at Kirk. "You got something to say to be about my drinking, then say it. You say don't like 'what -if's' so don't throw them back at me."

"I'm saying you can't be drinking when stuff is going on that is so important!" Kirk growled back, giving him a stare. "I spent three years in the academy with you Bones. I know when you drink, and it's when stuff's at its worst."

"You're being a fucking hypocrite about this, you know?" Bones shot back. "It's okay for you to handle things your way, ignoring shit that everyone else sees, that's right in your face, but you want to tell me how to handle my problems?"

He shook his head, turning his body away from him. "Sorry, not interested."

"WHO is the hypocrite here?!" Kirk just about snarled the word, "You're the one who brought me in here telling me how I was handling things was wrong, while I was still being captain and doing everything I could during everything that happened around Juxta including the shit with the Farragut and Starfleet, and when I point out you're being no better, you start getting pissed off at me?"

Kirk stood up, eyes narrowed. What right did Bones have to throw that shit in his face? He couldn't ever remember being so angry with his friend, and definitely not with everything they had become since then.

He let out a breath, looking to the side, "Fine." His voice had calmed, "Then don't be interested." He turned on his heel, heading towards the door.

Bones stood, watching Kirk as he walked away.

"Have to admit, you lasted longer here than I thought you would," he muttered loud enough for Kirk to hear. "Pegged you to run away a lot sooner than you did. Good job."

Every inch of Kirk froze. He didn't look back, "What did you say?" He said in a blank tone.

Kirk's fingers curled into fists at his side, the memory of bar fights and back alleys flooding into his mind. Taunts followed by that exact tone, those exact words, each one that made his blood boil.

Kirk turned slowly and faced Bones, "Then come over here like a fucking man and say that to my face."

Locking eyes with Kirk, he walked over slowly, back straight, stopping only when he was right in front of his captain. "I'm right here, Jim. You going somewhere?"

"Interview sure as fuck seemed over, Doc." Kirk said tersely, fists clenched tightly enough at his sides that the bones throbbed in time with his heart.

"Way I remember it," Bones said, holding his ground, "I called you a hypocrite, you didn't like it, and decided to take off. Or is that you 'handling it'?" Bones asked, making quotation marks with his hands.

Every instinct, cultivated over years and years of time and being forced to fight for pride, survival, and less, told him to deck Bones in the face. Bones wasn't a trained fighter. He'd go down easy. He'd pay for it. Bones was pushing him on purpose. Bones knew what set him off.

He felt his fist tighten and come up. He watched Bones' eyes flinch shut.

What are you doing, Jim?

He turned on his heel and walked out of the door, letting it hiss closed behind him as he walked down down the hall.

He needed to think.
