(Video is disabled from being embedded but... someone sent me this song with the following comment: "Hey, I think she's one of those girls Kirk slept with and left in the morning."

[OOC - Wow, she's hot. Also, I really like the costumes on the backup dancers...those corsets were way too big though. Women these days have lost the art of being able to dance while unable to breathe. Did you know that when ballet was first invented, they wore corsets?]

[[OOC - Out of curiosity--I don't know much, at all, about ballet--wasn't it athletically a much less strenuous prospect? Which is NOT to say any of it would be remotely easy in a corset, I just recall that pointe came later and a lot of the other stuff was added later. When, granted, they may still have been wearing corsets.]]

[OOC - No...pointe shoes came later. They danced on pointe, barefoot. It may have been less strenuous, but ballet fucks up dancers' feet enough even with shoes.]

[[OOC - Ah. Okay. I misread something somewhere. My understanding was that ballet grew out of very courtly dancing, less leaping and whatnot.]]

[OOC - That's quite possible, but my understanding was that the point of ballet was to create the illusion of weightless dancers. They're on pointe because it puts them higher into the air, the tutus are supposed to make them look floaty, that sort of thing...so lots of leaping would fit with that.

Then again, I learned all this in a required art history course in sophomore year of high school and could be misremembering.]

((OOC: From what few ballet classes I've taken, even not en-pointe dancing is really really exhausting. You're trying to make every movement graceful, and standing up straighter than you've ever needed to before, and yeah, trying to look like you and gravity are only passably acquainted. Can't imagine doing it while in a corset.))

[OOC - In that class, during the unit on dance we watched a scene from Oklahoma! where the ladies are all dancing in their undergarments. It's not exactly ballet, but still I can't imagine possibly being that graceful while a large portion of my body is encased in an inflexible structure!]

((OOC: *ponders this* Apart from the lack of breathing, that would actually make it easier possibly. In Ballet you're not supposed to be all loosey-goosey in the upper region. Well, you're not supposed to be loosey goosey anywhere but especially your torso should remain quite straight. And if you haven't seen the whole of Oklahoma! you really need to. It's one of my favorite musicals))

[[OOC - I did a tiny bit of historical reading, but mostly wikipedia. Which, I know, I know, shameful for a librarian and all that. I think you're correct about the point, but I think there was also a development towards more strenuous and demanding methods of achieving it.

Haha this is so far off the point of anything!]]
