Scotty picked up the second PADD and braced it atop his own as he tabbed through it. His expression shifted gradually as he scanned the information.
The Captain wanted to change how the running shields functioned?
Scotty took a seat in one of the chairs opposite Kirk and frowned thoughtfully as he tabbed the various levels of information. The theory was reasonably sound, the applicable design needed tweaking, but was fairly correct. The concept was strange, and the arrangement wasn't Starfleet standard, though. The whole thing held an oddly foriegn flavor. Scotty looked up at the Captain, brows furrowed.
"Yes." Kirk said simply. He knew it wasn't anything like any normal shielding on a ship - in his mind, it was fucking better. If his idea behind it was strong enough, if he was right, there would be no ship like it. Specially with the Enterprise's surprising level of intelligence, and he would definitely call it that...
"Aye," Scotty repeated and eyed the PADD. He was silent for several seconds as he surveyed the information before him. After a long time, Scotty looked back up at the Captain and frowned lightly.
"I can do it, Capt'an," Scotty added slowly, "But there needs tae be...a few alterations." He motioned to several of the overlays and the control systems and nodded sharply. "But I thin', given enough time an' a good crew, I can do it."
"Tha idea is ta' allow overclocked slip shielding, aye?" Scotty rephrased as he eyed the diagrams before him. "Tae' allow fer the shields ta' focus power specifically an' deflect more effectively?"
He was less asking, at this point, and more stating as he read through the designs. It would require a good number of emitters, and the power drain would be a much greater burden on the main core than the normal shield alotment--especially if they required a separate system to regulate the new shield arrangement. It looked like the designer had taken the eventuality of system failure into mind, though, and that was comforting. Scotty had rigged stranger and would be called on to do so again, and again.
"If ye' can find someone who can math' er out--ye'd need years more experience in theoretical mathematics and variable equations then Ay've got, tha's fer right certain. An' ya' can find an operator who's got reaction time borderin' tha speed a' light," Scotty announced with a hiss, "Slo'est Ay'd wager ya' could fathom...twenty...nae, ten milliseconds."
He looked up at Kirk, then. "Any longer an' we'd all be in absolute barney."
"We have someone who can do that sort of math on board, so that isn't the problem. The point is NOT to need an operator that has that sort of reaction time." Kirk gestured, leaning forward. "The point is to use incoming data from navigation and helm and engineering to supplement the shields instead of just holding them. The first is that the secondary shielding would be controlled by the Enterprise herself, allowing navigation to focus on the biggest things. And she does have that faster-then-light reaction time."
