Communication to All

Your oh so lovely Captain has reserved an entire bar for our use for our final night on Risa! You can get the position of it from the attached file. Nice little place, tucked up on the beach and right up against the waterline, full bar with everything you can imagine! I'll be seeing you all around sunset!


[OOC: This thread can run as long as we need it too, far past the 'end' of Risa Saturday night. Feel free to post anywhere, there's no order, who gives a damn about how the thread looks, just HAVE FUN!]

"It's McCoy, Leonard McCoy." No doubt Scotty had probably met his counterpart already. "And I hear that - can take 'em in small doses, but after a while I need a breather." McCoy moved his gaze back to the horizon, tapping the side of his glass so that the ring on his little finger clinked quietly in the gathering dark. "Still, seems you've slipped in well, people person or no."

He'd miss this when they were back on the ship - this simple feeling of being somewhere unconfined. He always did for a short while, before he readjusted himself to metal and engines instead of turf and open air.

He filed that away; he did indeed meet the other McCoy, and got his face fixed up so he wouldn't look so much like he had his ass handed to him. But he still wasn't able to go and make himself call a senior-ranking officer (and someone older than him) by their given name. It was just an ingrained habit. "Nae really. I dinna..." Scotty frowned a little to himself, then leaned his head back against the side of the bar. "I'm nae very comfortable 'round 'em. Too many people, too small a space." He looked back up again. "Ye're with th' older Captain Kirk?"

"You could say that." He answered with a slight smile. "I do my best to keep him out of trouble, at any rate." He cast a glance back towards the bar - could only wonder what the man in question was up to at the moment. Well, at least the singing had stopped for now...

He looked once again towards Scotty, approaching his next question with caution. "If you don't mind my asking, son - and feel free to tell me to keep out - where exactly did you turn up from?" There must've been some transporter-mixup when he'd appeared, but...was he just from a different timeline, an earlier model of their old Scotty, or was it more complicated than that? If that was possible. Either way, it was doing the doctor's head in just thinking about it, but his curiosity led him to ask, whether he got an answer or not.

"I dinna mind." Scotty finally stood up, setting his plate on a nearby table. "Honestly, sir, I dinna ken. I was in San Fran, waitin' t' start Command School, an' then I was waking up in Sickbay up there," he cast a look skywards, before looking back at McCoy, albeit a little sidelong. "Ye think..." There was a long pause. "The 'other'; nae the Scott 'ere, the blond one. Th' one ye lot serve with, in yer universe..."

He wasn't sure he wanted to know that answer, but he was still curious. "What's he like?"

"Nothing short of a miracle-worker." He didn't even have to think about it. "During all the years I've known him, he's never let us down. And I tell you," he chuckled quietly. "We've certainly put him through his paces in that time." There'd been a lot riding on the poor man's shoulders on far more than one occasion, but somehow or other he'd always hauled them through.

McCoy was perfectly happy to indulge Scotty's question - it made sense he'd be interested to know. He was, after all, technically hearing about himself, in a roundabout way.

Scotty was more looking for... some kind of an answer. To himself, or to the universe even. He took that in and nodded, but already had realized a fairly important fact.

"I canna be him, or he'd remember bein' me," he finally said. And he knew he would get no answers there, even though he had hoped he would. In the end, he still had to find them for himself.

"Well, if there's one thing I've picked up from all this - things don't always make sense, but they can end up working out anyway." He glanced over at the somewhat-confused cadet and offered another smile. "You might not be him exactly, but you sure look like you're built of the same stuff." He'd only been talking to him for a while and already McCoy could see elements of their own CE in the younger man. "You'll give him a run for his money, at least."

He gave McCoy a dry, slightly rueful smile. "Oh, maybe. I dinna ken, really; I dinna understand th' one here, so well, except that he didna quite grow up like I did. Well, that an' bein' born nine years after me, or when I woulda been born, in this universe. Yer Scott..." He reached up and flipped a shock of his own black hair. "He looks like me, right?"

McCoy surveyed Scotty before nodding. It wasn't just the hair-colour - he was younger, of course, but they definitely looked very similar.

"He does indeed." And both looked very different to this Enterprise's engineer - for some reason, the discrepancies between the Scottys across universes seemed to be rather more substantial than those between anyone else, excluding perhaps the Chekovs (had their own one been over here, of course). Yet another factor that didn't make much sense, but by now McCoy had stopped keeping count. "Any particular reason why you ask...?"

"'Cause then he was born when I was." Scotty nodded, narrowing his eyes a bit in thought. "Same date, nae different. An' that means that he almost had t' grow up like I did, aye?" He cocked his head to the side; yes, he certainly shared a lot of the same body-language, too, as his older self. "It's nae that important, 'cause I'm nae him, but... I suppose I'm glad he's an engineer, ken? That he's an engineer on a Constitution-class starship."

A long moment of quiet. "That he made it."

There was a lot resting in that one simple statement - the air was almost tangible with it. McCoy paused before speaking again, watching the kid, this Scotty-who-wasn't-but-was, try and figure out just how this all fitted together. He might've only met him a short while ago, but already the doctor felt somehow drawn to keep an eye on him, the lad who somehow slotted in and stuck out all at the same time. When he answered, his voice was slightly softer than before.

"You might be different, you and him, but you share a lot. I'm willing to bet you'll share that future as well."

Yes, this McCoy was dangerously easy to talk to. Kind of made him wonder if his older self felt the same way; a kind of almost natural affection and easy-going chemistry. He supposed they must have at least been friendly. "Maybe; I dinna ken. No tellin' the future, aye?"

He shook off the introspection, then raised his eyebrows. "I'm doin' all th' talkin, there. Where are ye from?" McCoy sounded like an American, a certain easy and slow rhythm to his words. A warm accent. Scotty thought American south, but wasn't sure.

"Me? Atlanta, Georgia." Even just saying the name increased the Southern twang he usually bit down on. Mind you, he'd been so relaxed recently that it had been slipping anyhow, so...Hell, a little more wouldn't hurt. "Fine place, very fine indeed."

He still missed it sometimes, and if that made him a sentimental old fool, so be it. Anyone who thought so had clearly never been there, or they'd understand why it could be pined after.

"I was somewhere down that way fer an exercise in Basic. Very... warm." He grinned a bit; he wasn't too good with hot climates, though he'd adapted pretty well to Risa after a couple days. "I liked yer fireflies, though."

Harold was reasonably drunk when he left McCoy, wandering toward a voice he happily recognized.

He knew Scotty was safe, McCoy and reassured him, but he still wanted to make sure. He hoped he wasn't intruding, as Scotty had apparently struck up a conversation with-- huh. Deja Vu. Could be brothers.

"Scotty," he said, relieved. "You okay?"

He gave Harold a bit of a smile back, and nodded. Admittedly, he'd probably have rather stayed under his pier, but it wasn't quite as bad as he expected. And his face did hurt less. "Aye, Harold. Are ye all right?"

"Drunk. Happy. Confused. Good. Thanks for asking, man." The words were a little slurred.

"Glad you're here, man. You guys need anything? Want a drink? I could get you some food?"

Scotty shook his head. "No, I'm fine. I'll grab somethin' else t' eat before headin'... er... home, I guess."

Harold nodded, once to Scotty and then to the stranger that looked familiar.

"Catch you later, okay? Gonna go see what I see. Come find me, if you want."

He turned on his heel, stumbling only slightly, and waved as he walked away.

McCoy smirked. "'Warm' is the nice way of putting it." That famous Georgian humidity was one thing he didn't miss. Still, at least it had put him in good standing for all of those desert/tropical planets they'd always insisted on visiting... "Guessing it's a bit of a change from your home climate, huh?" One extreme to the other, almost.

He chuckled slightly at the mention of the fireflies - they were enchanting little things, it was true. Joanna had loved them when she was younger.

After Harold's quick check-in, Scotty nodded back at McCoy. "Aye, a bit. Aberdeen's fairly o'ercast most o' th' time, an' it doesna actually get warm nor cold, so much. Well, th' North wind can get a wee bit icy sometimes, but mostly it's just wet and cool most o' th' time."

He held a hand up, still grinning, and looked at his fingertips. "We dinna have any fireflies in Scotland. They all crawl right t' the tops o' yer fingers t' fly away."

Even so, 'wet and cool' wasn't a climate McCoy was very used to - he imagined it would feel quite different to a person who wasn't accustomed to living there.

He smiled at the simple gesture, glancing absent-mindedly at his own hands. "They're pretty little critters, that's for sure. My daughter always wanted to catch one, but she never did manage it - always moved just out of her reach."

"Now she's..." McCoy felt a strange sort of jolt when he realised he had to think about that. He tried to blame it on the whole timeline-confusion thing. It didn't work. "She's twenty-three - those fireflies were a long time ago now."

Wow, she was older than he was. But he just nodded, falling silent after McCoy's falter there. And the inevitable implications therein.
