kirktastic: ((Smile - Bright Upwards) Shine like sun)

After making plans with Spock and definitely having worked on his tan, Kirk showered, got himself cleaned up, and dressed. A casual sort of button up shirt and dark jeans, something simple and easy for vacation, but if the place was a little fancier, it'd be fine buttoned up fully. He left the top buttons open, for now.

Without the cycle swiped by Bones, Kirk left early so he could walk into town. Not a long walk, about fifteen minutes, but it was made easy by getting a ride from a group of very lovely ladies. He made his goodbyes (not before slipping them his comm information with a promise for fun), and walked along the boardwalk. Almost on intuition, thinking about the dream last night, he stopped in a store briefly and made a quick purchase. With the bag in tow, he headed for the bay proper and looked for Spock.

Probably wouldn't take long.

"Hey, Spock?" He asked quietly, but continued right on. "...remember how you told me you could teach me how to shield myself? Would you still be willing to teach me? ...Later, and what not. When we're back up on the ship and everything."

Another bite of the strawberry. "I would be willing," He agreed (and he wondered, for a moment, whether he even has the capacity to refuse, after--this was his third, strawberry, right?). "You are already aware that it is more matter of you finding the time to concentrate on learning. Though it would be an useful skill for you to have, as a captain, on this mission, even to the most basic degree." The entirety of the five-year mission. Not all species were conveniently psi-null.

"I'll make time. This is important." Kirk said with a small shrug. "...thanks, though. I just hope I don't end up driving you nuts." A laugh came with that - he had no idea how he'd take to this mental work out.

"Doubtful. I have already survived this long." He remembered what he had been taught on Vulcan as a child, so he wouldn't be teaching blind. Not all of it would be applicable, of course, but they would be helpful guidelines.

"Hey, another joke." Kirk teased just a little, but his voice was warm, almost affectionate. "I'm glad. I think... well, it'll be damn useful if I can manage it. If nothing else, I'd like to learn more about it."

As he finished off his third strawberry, he wasn't sure if that warm feeling curling in his stomach is from the chocolate or from Jim being surprisingly reasonable, because that was attractive in its own way. "You shall, though I am of the opinion that practical applications would provide the most benefit to you."

"Probably because I tend to learn best through practical applications." Kirk agreed with a lazy grin on his lips. "Books and I never get along unless I'm reading them for my own enjoyment. I'm a hands on guy."

Surprisingly, said without a trace of double meaing.

In his state, though, Spock considered it anyway. The thought briefly flickered through his mind before being shooed out. "...I am of a similar disposition myself, though our definitions of leisure reading appear to differ." People thought he read research reports just because he was a science officer. Not really.

Spock motioned to the remaining strawberry, sitting alone in the container. "Jim?"

"Mm?" A glance down, and Kirk gestured at it, "All yours, if you want it." He dug into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small bag of sour hard candies. "Prefer these more, anyway."

He took it without any hesitance, emptying the container and now having his fourth (and thankfully, last) chocolate strawberry in his hand. The candies look vaguely familiar, when he glanced at them, and Spock thought, perhaps, he had sampled them from one of the nearby shops. But his mind was more preoccupied with the treat at hand. Once again, he rotated it idly between his fingers.

"...hey, Spock? What's the name of the climbing vine that sat on the balcony of your home?" He was staring straight ahead, his face composed.

Spock looked at him, eyebrow arched, just about to take another small bite of the strawberry when he heard this question. "A nar'ru." But his answer was not the important part here. "Why do you ask?" How did he know?

"Nar'ru." Repeating it to make sure he sounded it right, putting it together with an image of the vine. "Was bothering me that I had no idea."

Once again, the chocolate prevented him from feeling properly annoyed at Jim. "How are you aware of the vine?" Spock knew for a fact he had never told him.

Oh, this was going to get a little awkward. "...Spock, the other Spock, and I... definitely have something going. S'not a bond, like he's got with the other me and Bones, but... something. I dreamed. He was there. I've never been on Vulcan."

From: [identity profile] cso-spock.livejournal.com
It wasn't...something completely unheard of, he reminded himself, and given what his counterpart shares with the elder Jim, and the foolish acts his Jim has tried with him, this not-a-bond should be no surprise. So he didn't strangle him, or else try to physically harm or intimidate him. "How much did you see?"

"Some of Vulcan." Kirk said lightly, but his eyes closed as he remembered it. "All..." He put his hand up at an angle, "Rocks, huge ones, shaped like that. Mountains in the distance. A stone balcony with several seriously uncomfortable looking chairs. The nar'ru in the corner... there's a glass door with curtains separating the house and the balcony."

Without a doubt, it was a setting he was familiar with, a place he had sat to look up the stars, much like he was doing now. Finally, he took his first small bite of the strawberry he held. He had to savour this last one. "You would be overlooking The Forge." Thinking about that canyon brings up vivid memories of both his kahs-wan and his Rite of Tal'oth; he closes his eyes at the remembrance, and his brows narrow slightly.

"It was beautiful." Kirk said so softly he wasn't even sure it was heard. "So alien but... like it was home." It was home. A part of his heart called it home, but he didn't know how to explain that to Spock in the least.

Spock heard it, over the soft crash of the waves against the rocks. "...At least you were able to see a portion of it." Since it was gone, now, only saved in memories, including those Jim wasn't supposed to have.

"I wish I could have seen it all." Kirk looked to Spock, just from the corner of his eye. Another human, he would have reached out and squeezed the other's shoulder. But... it was Spock. But, then again... he thought of the dream.

And took a chance. He did exactly that, giving Spock's shoulder a light squeeze. He knew that pain, somehow, impossibly. Emotional transference, it had been called.

His eyes opened at the touch, and it was as much surprise as he showed. He glanced down at the hand on his shoulder, and then up at Jim. His own telepathy was carefully guarded through the fabric of the shirt, but it still brought it's own...comfort. "Likewise."

"Someday, you'll have to tell me more about it all. Only way Vulcan can stay alive is in our memories." Kirk murmured, not even fully realizing what hint he was giving away in his words.

He thought of another place, another time, a desperate situation, and warm fingers on his face.

Our. Spock was rather sure that he should be noting something about his words, but he felt more content to let it go for now. He'd analyze it later, when Jim wasn't around to confuse him further.

"...I look forward to the next opportunity."

"Still up for having dinner?" Kirk asked, "...otherwise, I'm gonna watch the stars." He was honestly happy either way. It felt... nice, like this. Spock's warmth at his side, talking like friends instead of enemies at worst and captain and first officer at best.
