kirktastic: ((Sad Eyes Open) I don't want to tell you)

[Rifts in the Boredom of Forced Sick Leave] -- [Open]

Things had gone... interestingly the night of the party. The small memory put a smile to Kirk's face, despite his complete boredom and annoyance at still being trapped in his room. He could leave, he could walk around, but there was nothing he could do. Damn CMO's orders.

Even if, you know, he was sleeping with said CMO.

There was still a lot to be done, and damn if he was just going to sit back while it happened. Which had led him to sitting on his bed, naked from the waist up, leaning over a padd as he tried to figure out the exact time not one but two people had evidently gone missing from his god damn ship.

And getting no where fast expect to a headache.

Well, at least she got right to the point. "Well, what were you doing before you got on the ship?" He asked, because he didn't know a damn thing about her.

She sighed heavily. "Well...I got my doctorates in anthropology just before Lenny..." She winced. "Er...Leonard was born. Specializing in osteology. I did my undergraduate work in bioengineering and my research was heavily in prosthetic and and bone marrow regeneration." She rolled her eyes. "My brother and his husband kept trying to call me Bones because of my post-doctorate work."

intra-ship communication: CMO McCoy to Captain Kirk

Hey you -

Figured you were getting pretty bored, so I thought I'd give you something to do. Look under the bed.

I'll be home a little late from shift, been running late all day.

"I don't think I'll ever get used to 'Lenny'." But the last part just made him laugh, "You know what I call him, right?" He grinned brightly, "Been calling him Bones since like, the second or third time he and I ever meet."

[identity profile] kirktastic.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
He knew a lot about not talking, now. He didn't even know what made him start again. "..So the Klingons and Romulans took advantage." He muttered quietly. He couldn't even handle the other parts. He wasn't, and would never be, a Papa. He liked Dad better anyway.

[identity profile] emma-mccoy.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Em had to laugh at that. "Oh the irony...Winston would probably laugh his ass off if he knew." She wrapped her arms around herself. "If you want...I can see if I could fish a CV or resume from the university's database. I taught at the University of Georgia."

[identity profile] joanna-mccoy.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm sure they saw it as a great opportunity," Joanna nodded. "After all, why hold to treaties made when the Federation was at a point of strength? With Earth and Vulcan gone...the federation was...looser, wilder, I guess, than what Daddy and the rest used to talk about. You'd hear talk about how other ships weren't so kosher in their dealings, half pirate...each Captain was king of his vessel and it was harder to police them."

[identity profile] kirktastic.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
"You don't have to." Kirk gestured a little, "I think I can trust you telling me the truth."

He leaned forward, meeting her eyes, "Mrs. McCoy... what would you like to be doing?"

[identity profile] emma-mccoy.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
She looked at him in the eye. "I...I don't know, captain. I know I just want to be there for my boys. And since they're both on this ship. I'd like to be able to stay with 'em."

[identity profile] kirktastic.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
"Amazing." Kirk whispered, closing his eyes. He never would have allowed for something to happen like this, but it could have happened. If they had listened to Spock over him.. if he had been slower...

Fuck. "Have you... talked to Bones at all? Well, obviously a little but... I mean any major way?"

[identity profile] joanna-mccoy.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
"Bits and pieces...we talked a bit during the party, but it's not like we've sat down and shared life stories...we agreed to be friends and probably family."

"My Spock kinda stole me from the medical career...first padd I used, he gave to me. It had a scientific journal article in it." It wasn't all gloom and doom back home. "I'm a certified EMT but I'm a thesis defense shy of my masters degree in Biotechnology." She flashed Jim a small grin. "And if you're anything like my Papa you really don't want to hear about the details."

[identity profile] kirktastic.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
Kirk rubbed his forehead slowly, trying to think. "I'm willing to let you stay on, ma'am. You said... prosthetics and bone narrow regen?" He tilted his head. "Sounds useful down in med."

[identity profile] emma-mccoy.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
"Well my research was in both. I never got to finish the bone marrow regeneration project. Death kind of stops you from doing that." She gave him a wry grin and considered what other marketable skills she had. "I'm a pretty easy-going person. Managed not to ruffle anyone at the party. And I really shouldn't stay in medical all the time. That's Lenny's..." She closed her eyes. "Leonard's domain."

[identity profile] kirktastic.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 12:24 pm (UTC)(link)
"Leo." Kirk offered. "Len." Trying to give suggestions that might make it easier for her then 'Leonard'. "I don't think anyone familiar with him has ever called him Leonard for any length of time without him getting grumpy." Kirk grinned a little more.

Emma McCoy, it seemed, was just one very easy going woman. She was beautiful, no doubt, and surprisingly sweet. (Still Bones' mom. Fuck, that still made him cautious around her.)

"Could you continue that research? I don't think its an area anyone's gotten into, or at least I've never heard anything on the subject. I doubt any of your research got deleted and we have an Admiral on board who could access your old research if they've been that buried by time."

[identity profile] original-fine.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Jim shrugged. "I'm not asking you to talk about your feelings unless you want to," he said. "But the fact remains there are things going on here you need to know about. And I want... what we share to be strong enough to handle that."

He knew it was. It had to be. They were connected, in a way that wasn't his imagination.

[identity profile] emma-mccoy.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Em thought about it. "Nah, he hated it when I tried Len on him. Or at least, the 15 year old him hated it. 'Momma, that's worse than Lenny!'" She shook her head at the memory. "God, when McCoy men team up against you, you don't stand a damn chance."

"Nah, like I told Monty, it's more than likely that someone took it and ran or it got dropped completely." She looked at her hands. "I was on my way home from the Vulcan Science Academy, a conference to get them on board with the research...we hoped to expand it to humanoids..."

An idea struck her. "Do y'all have a counselor? I'm not specified in psychology but my anthropology training gives me a pretty decent background in dealing with other cultures."

[identity profile] kirktastic.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"Then talk to me, Jim." Kirk stated bluntly, frowning a little towards his counterpart. "I can handle anything you need to throw at me. If I handle it in a way you don't agree with well... that's to be said later."

[identity profile] original-fine.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
That got him a little smile. "I know you can," he said. "Fine. I don't know what Spock's told you, but my Spock isn't on board. He's on the Narada. He... made a trade with her--with her sentient being, who is now partly manifest on the Enterprise."

It was blunt, but there was no easy way to say this. Jim watched Kirk's face carefully.

"Did you know?"

[identity profile] kirktastic.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Monty? It took a second before it clicked. Scotty.

Kirk rubbed his neck, listening, but the comment about the counselor struck him immediately. He looked to her, eyes bright and suddenly serious. "No, but yes. Yes, we could definitely use one."

He snapped, "We had someone," Harold, fuck.., "Getting training straight from Starfleet on the ship, you could do the same too."

[identity profile] kirktastic.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
What.

WHAT?

WHAT?

Kirk jerked upright and stared at Jim in horror for a second. "You guys let him go back over there. With the two who... Why!?" He choked, "And there's a part of..."

He looked away, trying to get his head around it. "Jim, start explaining."

[identity profile] emma-mccoy.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Em blinked. "Oh, he said that I could call him either Monty or Scotty. Mr. Montgomery Scott? Does no one call him Monty?"

"Would I be qualified for Starfleet training? I never enlisted. Would I need to go back to Frisco for the Academy?"

[identity profile] original-fine.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Jim took a deep breath, his hand instinctively reaching for any part of Kirk he could touch--but he dropped it without making contact. He'd had a few days to get... well, if not used to the idea, resigned to it.

"I didn't let anyone," he said, some little bitterness coming through in his tone that he had not allowed anyone else to hear. "I returned from a meeting with Acting Captain Spock about the results of the rescue mission to find Spock gone, a note bidding me not to worry and what appeared to be a young Romulan girl in his place. Narada requested his assistance. Spock accepted. Without consulting me. With shields up and neither the Narada nor Spock wishing his return, I felt I had little choice but to respect his instincts."

It was clear that despite his resignation, Jim did not take any of this lightly.

[identity profile] kirktastic.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"Never knew anyone to call him Monty." Kirk said lazily. "And.. yes and no. No, not having to go back. Yes, you qualify because you'll be coming under my crew and I fucking say so." He grinned lazily.

[identity profile] kirktastic.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Kirk pulled his other knee up and he closed his eyes. He looked... surprisingly younger like that. Defiant. "Are they still out there, Jim? Right outside our damn ship, with better shielding and weaponry? Why... Why are we putting more people at risk?"

[identity profile] original-fine.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's not my call, and you know it," Jim said, watching Kirk. "I asked Spock not to act hastily, because it was the Narada who saved us, who saved you, and the Narada has my Spock. Her master is in pain and Narada's priority is his healing. She's a new life form and she's learning and growing every day. Into what, I don't know. But she has offered none of us harm since we discovered her capacity for free will."
