kirktastic: ((Sad Eyes Open) I don't want to tell you)

[Rifts in the Boredom of Forced Sick Leave] -- [Open]

Things had gone... interestingly the night of the party. The small memory put a smile to Kirk's face, despite his complete boredom and annoyance at still being trapped in his room. He could leave, he could walk around, but there was nothing he could do. Damn CMO's orders.

Even if, you know, he was sleeping with said CMO.

There was still a lot to be done, and damn if he was just going to sit back while it happened. Which had led him to sitting on his bed, naked from the waist up, leaning over a padd as he tried to figure out the exact time not one but two people had evidently gone missing from his god damn ship.

And getting no where fast expect to a headache.

Joanna pressed the chime on Jim's quarters, two sandwiches in hand that she'd managed to get before the lunch rush. She knew the replicators could have made almost as good sandwiches but they were only almost as good. Not as good, and she was really just killing time anyway. This ship was so slow, quiet. It was weird. She wasn't entirely sure what to make of it, but at least this way she'd be able to talk to someone who know what was what.

Kirk got to his feet with a groan. Was it 'come find Jim Kirk' day and someone forgot to inform him? He glanced over his shoulder at the hypo Bones had left him in case the pain from his stiffness got too bad, but decided quickly against it.

There was a comfort in it being there, though.

He walked over to the comm and thumbed the button, "Who is it?"

[identity profile] joanna-mccoy.livejournal.com 2009-11-04 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"Joanna," Jo responded. "I come bearing food. You busy?"

[identity profile] kirktastic.livejournal.com 2009-11-04 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"Nah." The door opened, and Kirk stepped back from it. "Come on in, Jo."

[identity profile] joanna-mccoy.livejournal.com 2009-11-04 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Joanna walked in, looking around curiously. "Just sandwiches. My appetite's been shit lately with everything."

[identity profile] kirktastic.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
It was a mixture of his stuff and Bones', a little messy but not terribly so. "I could probably stand to eat anyway." He offered a tiny smile, not really sure what to do about this complete stranger. He gestured towards the desk.

[identity profile] joanna-mccoy.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
"Okay I have no clue what I'm doing here but I figure this can't end in complete disaster probably unless it just blows up in our faces but that mostly happens in the science bay anyway," Joanna put the food on the desk. "And we're not in science we're in your quarters and it doesn't look like you take science experiments home with you so we're probably good there so umm...hi. I'm Joanna Kathleen McCoy, ensign aboard the USS Enterprise from some future alternate universe."

[identity profile] kirktastic.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Kirk just stared at her, blinked again, then cautiously nodded, "Hi." He said after a few seconds. He eyed the sandwich, and was partly surprised to see it was his favorite. "Huh." He tilted his head - potato chips inside the bread and all.

[identity profile] joanna-mccoy.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
"That was my pa...Jim's favorite," Joanna explained. "I hope it's good. Sorry...I picked up babbling when I'm nervous somewhere."

[identity profile] kirktastic.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
"...s'mine too." Kirk agreed. He frowned a little at Joanna. "So talk to me. Bones hasn't told me much."

[identity profile] joanna-mccoy.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
"Which do you want first?" Joanna asked, picking at the bread. "Personal, professional, what happened at the end?"

[identity profile] kirktastic.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
"Most important stuff first." Kirk said, leaning back and taking a bite of his sandwich.

[identity profile] joanna-mccoy.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
"Earth imploded about two minutes after Daddy transported the both of us up onto the Enterprise. I think Jim was on the Narada at that point...anyway Jim and Spock and Admiral Pike transported back a bit later," Joanna shrugged. "Don't know what happened after that, Daddy forgot me in the transporter room in the rush. Well, I know but I wasn't present for it."

[identity profile] kirktastic.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
It didn't fully make sense to him. He wondered what happened just before that. Had that Bones forced that Jim to let him transport down? Or.. what? So the same thing had happened... on the Narada. Too late.

He looked down at his hand. Vulcan... Earth would have been there too.

[identity profile] joanna-mccoy.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
"Spent a year not talking. Used a padd a lot that year...still have to remind myself to keep talking sometimes," Joanna said. "Eventually started. Jim was Uncle Jim by the end of that year...he and Daddy didn't get together until I was about twelve or so. Started calling him Papa about thirteen/fourteen. He'd earned it plenty before then. He only once used his Papa status to kick my ass. I deserved it though."

"Graduated high school at fifteen. The Romulans and Klingons were really eatin' away out our borders by then. Enterprise was one of the last holdouts on the Exploration front, rather than the not-so-neutral territory."

[identity profile] kirktastic.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
He knew a lot about not talking, now. He didn't even know what made him start again. "..So the Klingons and Romulans took advantage." He muttered quietly. He couldn't even handle the other parts. He wasn't, and would never be, a Papa. He liked Dad better anyway.

[identity profile] joanna-mccoy.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm sure they saw it as a great opportunity," Joanna nodded. "After all, why hold to treaties made when the Federation was at a point of strength? With Earth and Vulcan gone...the federation was...looser, wilder, I guess, than what Daddy and the rest used to talk about. You'd hear talk about how other ships weren't so kosher in their dealings, half pirate...each Captain was king of his vessel and it was harder to police them."

[identity profile] kirktastic.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
"Amazing." Kirk whispered, closing his eyes. He never would have allowed for something to happen like this, but it could have happened. If they had listened to Spock over him.. if he had been slower...

Fuck. "Have you... talked to Bones at all? Well, obviously a little but... I mean any major way?"

[identity profile] joanna-mccoy.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
"Bits and pieces...we talked a bit during the party, but it's not like we've sat down and shared life stories...we agreed to be friends and probably family."

"My Spock kinda stole me from the medical career...first padd I used, he gave to me. It had a scientific journal article in it." It wasn't all gloom and doom back home. "I'm a certified EMT but I'm a thesis defense shy of my masters degree in Biotechnology." She flashed Jim a small grin. "And if you're anything like my Papa you really don't want to hear about the details."

[identity profile] kirktastic.livejournal.com 2009-11-08 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm more of a 'give me the major points' sort of man." Kirk could agree with that, chuckling before taking another bite. He chewed it before adding, "That's quite a record under your belt, though."

[identity profile] joanna-mccoy.livejournal.com 2009-11-08 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
"Nah, it'd be quite a record if I already had my masters," Joanna responded wryly. "As it is, I just had some real good teachers and I didn't have to be held back by other classmates. The EMT was so I could keep getting the gossip in the Science labs. Spent a year on planet, and Spock warned me if I kept writing to whine at him, I could cease writing, and he'd have to reevaluate my suitability for placement in his lab. So, I had to do something...and EMT certification was useful...and alleviated a bit of my guilt about not being a physician like Daddy and Paw-Paw."
